The casting of award-winning actor Denzel Washington as the legendary ancient general Hannibal Barca in an upcoming Netflix project has reportedly outraged Tunisians who argue it is racial recasting that erases their history.
Netflix touted the film in a press release, about "the Carthaginian general who famously led an army of warriors and elephants across the Alps to fight the Roman Republic during the Second Punic War."
Hannibal’s home region of Carthage is now within Tunisia, the northernmost state in Africa and considered to be part of the Arabic world.
According to an English translation of French-language Tunisian news outlet La Presse, the casting of a Black actor to play Hannibal is "problematic."

It’s so stupid. Why not simply to a movie about Scipio Africanus? Denzel would be great in the role.
Give them a break. When most of your history is about warring tribes, throwing your poo at each other, and enslaving white women and children and then selling your own people into slavery; you have to steal other’s culture to prop yourself up.
“It’s so stupid. Why not simply to a movie about Scipio Africanus? Denzel would be great in the role.”
They’re throwing it in everyone’s face to show that they’re morally superior and to teach us a lesson.
Cultural appropriation.
Carthage was on the African continent, which is all Hollywood needed to decide Hannibal was black. You will never hear them refer to Elon Musk as Afro-American. Their small minds can only handle small concepts.
As long as they cast Leonardo DiCaprio as MLK, we’re even.
Carthage was a Phoenician colony, originally from what is now Lebanon, around Sidon and Tyre.
Sub-Saharan Africans were still in the sub-Sahara................
Wasn’t the role of ‘Hamilton’ available?
Scipio was Roman. He’s called Africanus because he beat the African Hannibal.
Scipio was a white Italian. He got the name Africanus because he DEFEATED Hannibal at the battle of Zama. As in, Scipio who conquered Africa.
I had read that in the latest Dr. Who series by the BBC the role of Isaac Newton was played by a black man. Einstein next?
Woke producers make bad movies and lose money. This movie will not sell well in foreign markets where most of the profits are made.
facts don’t matter, only race. However, I remember way way back when, I was told Hannibal was black. Surely public school wouldn’t lie to me???
He was not negroid either
I assume u were joking
Gollywood is too intellectually lazy to look up real Black characters of historic interest.
Like Gannibal.
The African adopted Godson of Peter the Great who went from slave child to member of Russian aristocracy and distinguished military officer ( he adopted the name Gannibal from his admiration for Hannibal) and is the great grandfather of the Russian poet and author Pushkin.
Now that would be a life movie I’d see.
Our only response to this wokeness historical revision…is to skip it.
And if it doesn’t matter…lets see Kevin Costner play ML King.
Pretty much
Revise all whiteness
Look at commercials today
Like Kevin McCarthy says
“It’s all just too dammed white”
I like Denzel I wish he’d refuse it
The day is coming when Denzel Washington plays George Washington and nobody notices.
The man is one of the great actors of our day.
The heck with skin color!
It could have been worse. The Tunisians should be grateful that Netflix didn’t cast a transsexual Asian as Hannibal.
