Massachusetts man wears “knife necklace”, trips, stabs himself…dies. Why do these things even exist?

Saugus, Massachusetts, Patrick Kenney Jr. was leaving Saugus' Kowloon Restaurant when according to authorities, Kenney fell and stabbed himself with his necklace knife.

I'll repeat that just so we're clear.

A necklace knife.

That's a necklace with a knife hanging on it.

Common sense and a minutiae of self-preservation makes it hard for me to believe such an accoutrement even exists in the world, but I checked. Amazon has dozens of these little death baubles for sale.

Whoever invented these should get a visit from Will Smith.

And the reason why they're a bad idea should now be obvious; you could stab yourself like Patrick Kenney Jr..

And even worse, Kenney passed away from his injuries, leaving behind a wife and two young children.

His bereaved family issued the following statement:

"Our family is mourning the loss of Patrick, focused on his wife Lauren and two young children, and trying to make sense of this horrific tragedy. Patrick was a loving father and husband, brother, son, and loyal friend to many. This is a horrible tragedy."

It is indeed a horrible tragedy.

A tragedy that could have easily been avoided by not wearing a knife on a necklace.

It looks like not many here have lived the hard life, I guess they would really be shocked to learn there are guys out there who sometimes carry sawed-off double-barrel shotguns around their neck.

A knife necklace, not a neck knife?

Thanks for the memory. Back in the good ol’ days when SNL was funny.

Let me guess. This doofus also used to run with scissors as a child.

Despite what his mother said.

He wasn’t, but it sounds like he had the sharpest knife in the drawer.

I feel like there’s probably a huge intersection between man buns and knife necklaces.

I don't know. Man bun boys usually strike me as too metrosexual as to carry/wear a weapon.

Men with small units who compensate by driving a huge 4X4 strike me as those who might wear a knife necklace.

Dude shoulda stuck to wearing that tie clip. Instead of a knife. He’d still be alive today.

I had to wear a medical alert necklace for a while years ago when I was on anticoagulants. I hated the damn thing.

I don’t like wearing jewelry of any kind. I’ve never worn a wedding ring my wife took my ring and traded it for a ring that she wanted lol. I haven’t worn a watch in 30 years. Even before the Advent of cell phones.

Took me a long time to stop wearing mine (under clothes).

Became a bit of a superstition or something.

I still put them on when feeling out of place.

Not a neck knife, but a piece of sharp unsheathed jewelry. Neck knives have been around for decades - I know a climber who carries one in case he gets bound up and can't get to his belt knife. They have sheathes. His has a thumb retention button.

This thing in the story, though, is really dumb. Harmless enough except if you get killed...

I am a USAF Viet Nam Era Vet on active duty in the last two months before the Era close out.   Saigon fell when I was in Basic Training.   I was not issued dog tags but I still had to wear the chain with locker keys on it.
