As a frequent traveler, one of the biggest issues I deal with is what I eat. I am a very picky eater; a confirmed carnivore my love of vegetables is weak at best and most notably, I don’t eat any fish or seafood. My fellow Americans may wonder why I phrase it that way, but I’ll get to that in a second. The point of this post is that even after years of writing about this issue I’m still faced with certain difficulties when I travel, and since I’ve heard from many people around the world who are just like me, I thought I’d write yet another post, this one a little more direct, in order to make my life and those like me a little bit easier when we travel the world.

Hawaii is great for seafood.
I am repulsed by raw tomatoes, but it has never occurred to me to blog about it.
I remember when I was on a strict low-carb diet and my brother decided to throw a pizza party for my newphew's birthday. Did I become an ass and demand that he provide me with food items more suitable to my special diet?
No I did not. I took a couple slices of mushroom pizza, threw the crust away when nobody was looking, and I survived.
If you are a frequent traveler internationally and you won’t eat seafood, your options may be limited in some places
I have 3 words for this snob: Sa She Me
Carnivory does not include hamburger buns or the veggies, but there is no penalty in having a burger from time to time. You just lose bragging rights about how strict you are.
He just hasn’t eaten fish when it’s cooked the right way.
I’ll take the shrimp but leave the octopus. I tried some deep fried octopus when I went to Rota, Spain during my Navy days. Disappointment. It tasted like Rubber Band Tempura!
Clowns like this, if all he had to eat was fish. He would be wolfing it down.
The only things I won’t eat are bugs and lab grown meat. But I would eat them if I were starving, with no other food around. Fugu is a famous Japanese poisonous fish. I would eat this too, if there was no alternative. A few people die each year from eating Fugu

AI sez:
Fugu, also known as pufferfish, is a delicacy in Japan and other countries. However, it is also one of the most poisonous fish in the world. According to the Japanese government, around 50 people suffer from fugu poisoning in around 30 incidents every year, some of which result in fatalities 1. The fatality rate is around 6.8% 2. Between 34 and 64 people are hospitalized, and zero to six die, per year 2. Most of the victims are anglers who rashly try to prepare their catch at home 3. In fact, between 2006 and 2015, 10 people died after eating fugu served by an unlicensed chef, most of whom had attempted to prepare it themselves 4. It is important to note that the restaurant preparation of fugu is strictly controlled by law in Japan and several other countries, and only chefs who have qualified after three or more years of rigorous training are allowed to prepare the fish 25. Domestic preparation occasionally leads to accidental death 5.
“I live in Maine and CT and hate lobster and shrimp. But am okay with raw oysters - go figure.”
At Mt Desert Island, Maine, I waded offshore. I reached down and found 3 sea urchins. I cracked them open and ate them raw. I always regret not trying to find some more. I was afraid of stepping on one and getting stuck with their spines. I should have put on my sneakers and gone looking for more urchins.
Raw tuna is very safe from parasites. Due to being caught and then frozen at very low temperatures. Temps that kill any parasites.99% of the raw tuna you eat as sushi and sashimi is frozen this way. Then shipped to the USA.
Stop the presses, big news. why do I even care.
“I have taken short vacations and journeys specifically to eat seafood.”
1980s to 1995 I would go vacation in Maine. Half the reason was to eat myself silly from eating the (free) mussels I would gather. Then grill them at the campground. I suppose you can still do this today. It was about 6$ per day at the National Park campground. And they were not crowded in June when we would go.
You must be a member of the Bush family. “I do not like broccoli. And I haven’t liked it since I was a little kid and my mother made me eat it. And I’m President of the United States and I’m not going to eat any more broccoli.”
George H. W. Bush
I have a couple of friends who don’t like fish or seafood. That’s OK, it leaves more for me.
I was a picky eater when I was a child, but eventually I grew up. There are a few things I don't care for now but I'm pretty much an omnivore. I travel all over the world for work and I've pretty much come to the conclusion that if it's not moving then I eat it. There are only two places I commonly go where I'm careful about what I eat, those are India and China. I actually love Indian and Chinese food but I don't trust their sanitation practices in India and China themselves. Any time I'm in England though I'm all over the Indian food. They have tons of good Indian restaurants because there are so many Indians there, with the advantage of a functioning health department to keep things clean, unlike India itself.
As an Alaskan I love smoked salmon and deep-fried beer battered halibut.
Everybody’s got their own thing. I mean I don’t think I’d try to be a foodie if there was a whole category of food I wouldn’t eat. But hey, if you don’t like fish, don’t like fish.
Based only on what I’ve heard, Hawaii is great for high prices, too. Right now, with the inflation we’ve already got in the 48 states, I think I’ll postpone any trip to Hawaii. However, I was there once, long ago with the USAF & I must say that I was suitably impressed with just about everything & especially the food. All provided free for military personnel of course.
I could comment on what sort of "meat" he likes to eat ...
but I'll just say that picky eating is not a good survival trait.
I am a very picky eater too. Unlike this stranger, I like seafood (except oysters, yech).
Many years ago, at least forty years, I got tired of my self-proclaimed betters saying you need to eat ____________(fill in the blank) because vitamins and minerals, bla, bla, bla...
I bought "Earl Mendel's Vitamin Bible", read it from cover to cover and have referred back to it many times. I take 21 pills, tablets or capsules of supplements every day, including the the ones that my doctors have recommended I take like fish oil and D-3.
I do eat lettuce, potatoes, carrots and pinto beans (no other bean or pea, well, except maybe a great northern if I'm in the mood).
I, to this day resent the persecution I suffered as a child at school and at home because I didn't "clean my plate." In first grade, I was made to sit by myself with my tray in front of me, in the school cafeteria until the end of school hours, because I didn't eat my English peas. I was spanked because I vomited up food I was forced to eat, or spanked because wouldn't eat something I was told I would like, but I knew better. Accusations that I only did it for attention. Constantly did without because I was given a hamburger with onions on it. Or doing without any food at all when everything on the table had inedible things in it. Mackerel fish patties never needed onions in them. Being a picky eater is a real thing.
