NATIONAL PIE DAY

Each year on December 1st, dessert lovers across the United States enjoy a slice of their favorite on National Pie Day. Pie is so delicious we celebrate it twice a year. The more popular date isJanuary 23rd.

#NationalPieDay

While it might be the lesser of the two celebrated PIE days (don't forget National Pi Day on March 14th), it happens to fall smack dab in the middle of a major pie-making season.

Take away ice cream as a dessert choice, and most people choose either cake people or pie people. Or, to put it another way, most people have cake or pie with their ice cream! The day combines our bumper fruit crops with a booming holiday season full of baked goods, cool weather, and rosy-cheeked children. It's definitely time to tie on those apron strings and get baking.

Of course, we make more than fruit pies! Savory pot pies provide comfort on a cold winter's day and the satisfaction a family cook needs when caring for a family.

HOW TO OBSERVE NATIONAL PIE DAY

Bake up your favorite pie or enjoy some leftover slices from the holidays. Visit the National Day Calendar® Recipe pages to discover some delicious pie-making. We also offer some others, too. When it comes to pie, or any food really, it is best enjoyed with others. Invite someone over for your best pie and coffee. Maybe there's a friend you haven't seen for a while. Pie starts conversations, and they're a great way to #CelebrateEveryDay too!

Q. How many pie days are in December?

A. We celebrate two pie days in December: National Pie Day and National Pumpkin Pie Day.

Q. Should a pie be served hot or cold?

Custard Pie. Or Buttermilk Pie which is pretty much a more tangy version without nutmeg.

I try to do "lost pie" recipes, ones you will never see on a menu in even the fanciest pie shop. There are a lot of them out there.

Nope. Did they have buttermilk pie?

I go through old cook books trying to find things I have never heard of before and springing them on my loving (and occasionally slightly confused) family.

Yes indeed! I like to use Mutsu (Crispin) apples, I mix in dried cranberries or dried cherries, and I add about a tablespoon of instant tapioca to soak up the juice that comes out of the apples as they cook, so it keeps it from getting soggy.

Before I put the top crust on, I put six thin pats of butter on top of the apples.

And I brush the top crust with a beaten egg before baking it.

I made my mom show me how to make them before she passed on, because when she gave you a recipe, she always left some things out...when I make them, I always think of her...:)

Some of the best stuff is found in the Church Lady cook books. Especially the rural ones from the 1930s. The less you needed “store bought” ingredients the better. Which is why potatoes were used so often. Flour had to be bought, potatoes you could grow in your garden.

Crumb Topped Cinnamon Roll Apple Pie

Ingredients 1 can cinnamon rolls tap here 5 Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced 1 cup + 2 tablespoons flour, divided 1¼ cup brown sugar, divided 1½ teaspoon cinnamon, divided 1 stick unsalted butter, melted

Icing: ½ cup powdered sugar¼ teaspoon vanilla ¼ teaspoon cinnamon 2-3 teaspoons milk

Instructions Preheat oven to 350 deg---spray pie dish. Toss the apple slices with the 2 tbsp of flour, ¼ cup of sugar, and cinnamon until evenly coated. Slice cinnamon rolls into ½ to ¼-inch rounds, and roll out it with flour until thin. Layer the bottom of the pie dish with the flattened cinnamon rolls to create a crust. Make sure there are no spaces between the rolls.

Pour the apples into the crust. It will mound up and almost seem to be overflowing. In a medium bowl, combine the butter, 1 cup of flour, 1 cup of brown sugar and ½ tsp cinnamon until crumbly. Sprinkle the crumb mixture over the apples. Cover lightly with foil and bake for 40 minutes. (My oven tends to brown things easily) Remove the foil and bake for another 10 minutes uncovered. Allow the pie to cool and make the icing. In a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and milk. Transfer the icing to a pastry bag or a plastic bag with the corner cut off, and drizzle with icing. Slice, then serve with vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce!

Oops.....slipped off my clipboard.

Pie in post #15 is an “Impossible Pie”....the easiest pie ever,
it makes its own crust and two delicious layers while baking.
