Headache from red wine? Science may finally be able to answer why some are left with splitting headaches
New York Post ^ | Nov. 20, 2023 | Marc Lallanilla

For many people, it’s the splitting red wine headache that follows soon after.

Medical researchers and wine lovers alike have tried for thousands of years to determine what causes some people to get a throbbing headache after drinking even a small amount of maroon-colored vino.

Theories abound: Some people blame sulfites, which are naturally present in wines and are added by some winemakers as a preservative. But sulfites are also present in foods like fruits, especially dried, and soy sauce, as well as in white wines — but those aren’t typically linked to headaches.

Eat Proscuitto, and nasty smelly hard cheeses along with smoked sausages. Of course with Red wine, Merlot or Cab Sav. Great times to be had, and no headache. If you are daring, good salsa goes great with it, dip the sauce with french break, and spoon the salsa... Believe me, I have a great recipe.

I don’t drink but decades ago when I did, yes, red wine gave me a headache next day but not white wine.

I distinctly noticed that.

I’m sure it doesn’t have anything to do with alcohol being toxic or anything like that

Interesting! I get headaches with some reds and not others and never white. I always get headaches when I take quercetin supplements too.

You have a great salsa recipe? I’d like to see it. Might get adventurous enough to try it.

The answer is obvious...

"Not tonight, dear, I have a splitting headache."

Quercetin is a known mast cell stabilizer and anti-inflammatory.

Yep, I had that problem. I switched to only white wine and never had the problem again.

I have the headache problem with wine. It’s almost always with California, Australian, NZ, S. American wines. I rarely have issues with European wines. I’ve made my own wine too, so I can taste the sulfites, and I can’t even pick up a sealed bag of the powder anymore without getting headaches. Now, acetaldehydes in alcoholic drinks are toxic and there are studies that suggest they can cause cancer. But it’s the acetaldehydes that gives wines their yummy flavor and bouquet. Beer has the most acetaldehyde. Vodka has the least. Everything in moderation folks.

No mention of methanol alcohol produced in the fermentation process.

Never was a wine drinker - it all tastes like ruint grape juice to me. I do recall mixing red wine with beer once and being laid out sick the next day.
