Why can't we use modern technology to vote?
“A SSN is used so broadly that it is simple to compromise, so you would need additional security factors.”
I agree. And those could be built into the process. Multi-factor security would be an option.
Yup,
Unless you believe people are naturally good and moral, you need to have a system where it is hard to cheat.
Power and billions of dollars are at stake, and some people will murder their brothers, parents or priest for a fraction of what is at stake in these elections.
Games with our elections have been getting played since, forever. Gerrymandering became a known concept already in 1812: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gerrymandering
All you’re doing with all this mail in/absentee and digital voting is opening more doors for potential election fraud.
If you actually want the system to be resistant to fraud to some extent, it needs to be SIMPLE and with a chain of custody, and TRANSPARENT.
That is how you do it in law enforcement and engineering. The same concept holds true for elections as well.
There are many ideas folks have as to how we can fix things, but one thing is for sure, when you have a system as today where you have networks, computers with programs, digital displays, mail in ballots... you are begging/asking for fraud. It’s a basic and known concept: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Failure_mode_and_effects_analysis
The more points of failure and the more likely the point is to fail, the more overall likely a failure will occur.
However, today you have a situation where it behooves some folks to intentionally design into the system these failures. They do not see it as a “failure” if it means their party and candidate wins. By design, they want the ability to have folks harvest votes, they want the ability to manipulate the display and how things are presented, they don’t want the layperson to be able to account for what happened, they don’t want the records easily available and physically present... IMHO, the election system in the US is broke by design and our elections are maybe slightly more real than what you have in Russia.
I also work in IT and agree it is reprehensible. I would implement periodic NIST audits on all government databases to ensure compliance. I remember the issues we had with SQL databases and it wasn’t pretty.
I think Cymbeline is referencing another aspect...we are focused on the accuracy and security from the perspective of counting of votes, and Cymbeline is referencing the confidentiality of the vote. (correct me if I am wrong here)
I do see ways that confidentiality could be compromised with fully electronic voting (no matter the claims and protests of people designing the systems)
Sten’s points are well noted. A system that is maliciously/poorly designed and maliciously/poorly maintained is simply an empty electoral bucket that is ripe for abuse by Leftists.
And they WILL abuse it. They are like the dark, malicious ocean being held back by a dike. They are infinitely probing the dike, looking for weaknesses they can seep into to exploit. It should be the task of laws and strictures to ensure best practices are observed, not like the idiocy in the forensic analysis above where Antivirus was 4.5 years out of date, and Windows updates were 3.86 years out of date, people using admin passwords for all users, no database password protection, no encryption, etc.
All of that is wholly criminal. Criminal. Any REAL IT personnel would lose their job immediately over that, but when it is done to allow criminal activity, the left allows it, when they don’t actually reward it.
Everyone reading this already has an online ID assigned to them whether they’ve given their permission or not. The behavior of that ID is interpreted through algorithm and monitored by AI. Some day we will be told it’s not necessary to bother with the hassle of voting any more because AI can do it for us. AI has already predicted how we’ll vote. Oh how comfortable technology will make us in an environment of plague, war, famine and death. Problem - solution, and people will buy it.
Because it is not only on the road map of the likes of the bastardly anti-American Marc Elias and his scumbag allies to enable Ranked Choice Voting, and it is their goal to have it become law in every state.
But having the functionality there allows them to exploit it, and if it is discovered, they can shrug their shoulders and say "There was a mistake in the software/configuration that caused this error. We promise to address it."
If it is discovered.
If it isn't discovered, it won't "be addressed" and will become part of the election results where vigilant people might not be present or sharp enough to be suspicious and pick it up.
“No offense, but you are completely naive about the vulnerability of digital data and their gaslighting has had a demonstrable effect upon you.”
Spent 30 years in Information Technology doing pretty much every job there is. Using multi-factor authentication and encryption can be built into the application. Logging all transactions provides an audit trail.
I get it. The problem isn’t the technology but the people who will look at ways of hacking into it to support their own agenda. The good thing about what I am proposing is when the polls close, the database locks and the application is no longer available to use.
“So, vote thieves use your SSN to vote ‘before’ you; you then show up to vote, and your ballot is thrown into the “questionable” hopper. Then your vote languishes because the invalid vote is already in the system. Who your SSN originally voted for is in limbo and can’t be eliminated because of voter anonymity.”
How will the thieves do that exactly if multi-factor authentication is used? Go ahead, enter a false SSN. What’s the validation that it is actually the right person voting? You can steal my SSN, but you cannot steal my pin.
“Q: Why do states that don’t use RCV have RCV-enabled electronic voting machines...?”
Personally I’m not a fan of ranked choice voting, if that is what you are referring to. But it does have some merits.
A number. You never asked for it. You never signed a contract for it. It is used for managing human resources.
“As a programmer I hate electric voting. There should be a paper trail.”
I agree. Would an audit log be of use? We need to remember that people in senior citizens residences, the military, and others who cannot make it to the polls are basically disenfranchised if there is not an alternative.
“What is one thing every US Citizen has in common with WW2 prison camp survivors?”
Looks a little like the one my grandfather had when he was in Auschwitz.
The biggest problem with technology in voting is that the left is way better with tech than the right. That’s how they were able to run circles around the right in AZ. I watched some ballot curing in AZ and could instantly tell who was left and who was right. The conservative looked like a deer in the headlights while the dem clicked away rapidly on the computer.
I’ve built a few website for conservatives and they had trouble even logging in, let alone formatting a simple blog post. Compare that to any search results for a recipe. A gazillion liberal housewives that all know how to run their recipe site so well that they show up near the top of search results.
Conservatives can’t be bothered to learn basic tech so we’ll always lose the battle if it’s technology based.
“just because you filled in a ballot behind a curtain and put it in a box doesn’t mean they can’t check it and accept/reject it”
I’m talking only about confidentiality. Your ballot could be rejected, miscounted, etc., but at least it’s not known who cast it.
Confidentiality is less thought of in America because most don’t fear retribution if they don’t vote the way they’re told to.
We’ll be voting with paper ballots until we go on the QFS system. After that I’ve heard that we likely will be able to vote electronically as its a secure unhackable system.
I have to disagree with you entirely. RCV is STRICTLY a Leftist construct, designed to promote people who have zero mandate for their policies (such as Leftists) at the expense of other candidates.
Furthermore, if you ask someone to describe how their vote functions in an election, it is pretty simple: “You cast your vote, it is counted, and in the non-electoral part of an election, the one with the most votes wins.”
If you randomly asked a thousand people on the street to describe Ranked Choice Voting, I would pay money if you can get ONE person to describe it accurately.
Yes. Not a fan of RCV. I saw how that worked in real time in Maine when I was up there during the 2018 election. A travesty.
NO. everything is hackable.
I think voting should be difficult, not easy. Add some Darwinism in to it to weed the idiots and stupid out.
“Why can’t we use modern technology to vote?”
C’mon man! Hold my beer!
You can’t be SERIES?
The reason is, wait for it...... FRAUD!
NOT “voter” fraud, but “election officials/politicians” FRAUD.
THIS is how we should vote...
IN PERSON! (military or infirmed only exceptions)
Hand counted PAPER ballots
Photo ID
Prior registration
BAN “Exit Polls” (or at least the reporting of them while voting is under way)
National Day Of Voting
EVERYONE (except for far flung possessions/territories) votes during the same voting hours. Voting across the nation is finished at the same moment. NO extensions, no delays. The East starts later, ends later. The West starts earlier, ends earlier. We will ALL be voting during the same time frame. Voting will begin and END at the same moment across the nation.
Everyone (except essential people) has the National Day Of Voting OFF! No need to wait until after work, you have ALL DAY to vote!
BAN “Exit Polls”
By the following day we will have the results for all elections.
Check
It isn’t that the voting machines are ‘modern technology.’ The problem is that Democrats wantonly and openly cheat and they don’t care who knows it because all the leftist courts back them up as well as the MSM.
