The San Francisco Unified School District will reexamine its math curriculum following a near decadelong outcry from parents who have been incensed that the district stripped algebra from middle school curriculum.
Now, voters will get to weigh in on whether algebra should be offered in eighth grade.

Diophantus the father of Algebra would disagree it originated with the Arabs. The name for the mathematical discipline certainly did but not the subject itself.
“Spanish language has about 93,000 words”.
How do you say “Good Morning” in Spanish?
How do you say “Good Day” in Spanish?
“Buenos días”...
About 30% of San Francisco kids attend private schools.
Maybe 5-10% are homeschooled.
Add in the half that drop out before graduating and less than half the kids in SF are in public schools at any given time. Thankfully. They are crap.
I wish someone had taught me algebra in the 3rd grade. I’m a mechanical engineer and it sure would have helped me if I had learned my math earlier in life. I went to college at 27, after the military, and had to re-learn most everything as I had hardly been using it and because it wasn’t ingrained in me early I struggled more to keep good grades that others with less IQ even. I graduated with a 3.8 but I worked so very very hard for it. Shouldn’t have been that hard.
Algebra is the single most important subject I was EVER taught in all my years of schooling.
8th grade is the perfect time for it.
Any school board member who can’t see this is not worthy of their position.
WTH does being left handed have to do with math?
I admit vector calculus almost finished me, but then can claim taking it after an 8 hour work day was not a good idea.
This ping list is for the other articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)
The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.
“So now, every child is ‘equal.’ They are all equally ignorant, uneducated.”
And it’s not even 2081!
“THE YEAR WAS 2081, and everybody was finally equal. They were equal every which way. Nobody was smarter than anybody else. Nobody was better looking than anybody else. Nobody was stronger or quicker than anybody else. All this equality was due to the 211th, 212th, and 213th Amendments to the Constitution, and to the unceasing
vigilance of agents of the United States Handicapper General.”

I surmise you are left-handed but good at math. So was my Dad, a sales engineer for GE who reported directly to Jack Welch in the late 70s. I consider both to be anomalous, as left-handedness more often accompanies artistic pursuits. Who knows? Maybe I am prone to my own stereotyping.
The sad thing is, as much as I hated it school, it is FUN.
If you think long and hard about it...it is fun...to think of a problem and find a solution, is very satisfying.
Shame, young people in school today, will not have that pleasure.
Physician, heal thyself.
nearly?
Because black children, generally coming from more deficient schools do not do so well as white children in math. Or any other subject. So why not eliminate all those subjects that insult minorities and make everybody equally ignorant in all subjects? Except Basketball, of course.
and a Saxon Math algebra book. A literate kid with an IQ of 90 or so can teach himself algebra with the book alone. That’s why it was adopted and then rejected in some public schools years ago. A motivated student does not need an instructor. Teachers felt cut out of the loop.
Mañana.
I remember that one.
Grow up, kid.
Your examples do not play out in my experience. I know no artists though.
I noticed with surprise during a engineering class test in college the high % of left handers seen writing.
A lot higher number than seen in general type classes.
A cursory search on the subject indicates that I stand to be corrected, which is a surprise. While I am left handed, my math and logic skills are wobbly. My older brother, who was right-handed, could run circles around me when it came to that stuff. Anyway, studies are either inconclusive or favor left-handed people when it comes to math skills.
