I can be typing a comment, and not watching the field (once I've activated the cursor within it), then when I'm done typing, the field remains completely blank.
I then have to retype the entire comment, which never reads the way you want (unless you have perfect recall, which I don't, at advanced age) so the gist of the initial comment you have mentally formulated has been lost.
At first, I thought this was a system delay or preview function of some sort, on the browser, but now I don't know what it is.
Then the frustration sets in, of needing to retype one's thoughts a second time, which is never as good as the original concept, so I end up saying just forget it.
The keyboard and mouse work perfectly everywhere else. This situation is maddening and has only begun occurring over the past two to three months. I don't use any social media whatsoever, never have, so I'm basically flying under the radar at all times, which makes this even stranger.
I believe my browser (Opera with Google) has become compromised in some way, and that the failure of typed commentary to appear in the field provided by FR has something to do with an attempt by an unknown third party agency--through the browser--to blatantly frustrate, censor, and block participation in Free Republic.
If anyone else has had similar experiences, please comment accordingly. Please limit sarcastic and disrespectful and insulting chatroom-style hit and runs which waste your and my time, as well as use up costly FR bandwidth. Thank you. And Happy Thanksgiving to all.
Most likely it is your computer (or more likely your keyboard, is it wireless?)
Happened to me just last evening, but I was mildly inebriated, for which reason I am hesitant to invoke a third party.
Sounds like a bad keyboard to me.
Try selecting the post box before typing ...
It has to do with where the focus is. If you lose focus on the field, you are typing into nowhere. That can sometimes be caused by malware or an app taking focus away. Run a Malware scan
I think I found your problem... ;-)
I finally got locked out of most of my websites (except FR) for running Windows 7. I can’t imagine XP working with much of anything online now.
After a small level of chaos and adventure I’m on a new laptop running W11. Meh.
Too bad we never learned to touch type.
That’s what I was going to advise. Type it in Word, copy and paste…
Good choice.
I have Note Tab on this Win-7 Pro x64 machine, so I compose of that, COPY it over, in case the browser would lose it or I use a keyboard shortcut CTRL-V to paste to the FR box.
...”I compose ON that,...”
I’ve never seen anything like what you describe. Ever.
Maybe I’m not worth futzing with.
Against stupidity the mods themselves contend in vain.
Then "Review" it to check it out; and if OK, then hit "Post" to send it.
If you did not originally check to see if your typing cursor was blinking in the text entry pane, then if it wasn't you can type all you want without checking, and you will still have an empty pane.
(I've made that mistake many times. There are also other ways to nullify your text, also.)
A lot of excellent suggestions and explanations. Most appreciative, thank you. Though my money is on Malware and/or the Feds. There’s just too much going on now and the fear level is high amongst the illegally elected pols. And this only happens on FR, nowhere else, so it isn’t likely to be my equipment or programming (Windows 10) or even the browser itself, unless it has been enlisted in their cause.
Restart your browser.
Restart your Win10.
Sometimes an external program will ‘capture’ the input. A reboot usually clears that up.
C’mon. This is academic, not a conspiracy.
Try a different device, then figure out what’s wrong with the culprit.
If you find out what your browser/FR posting glitch is — hope you do — pls CC me.
Have you tried turning it off and on again?
“(once I’ve activated the cursor within it)”
Yeah, What is with that!
I can’t tell you how many times that I have typed comments only to look up and see NOTHING!
I forgot to “activate” the cursor within the dialog box!
WHY IS IT NOT *AUTOMATICALLY” ACTIVATED?
