Planning A Trip To Japan! (vanity)
Freerepublic.com ^ | 11/20/23 | Me

Posted on 11/20/2023 3:19:42 PM PST by RushIsMyTeddyBear

Planning a trip for the latter two weeks in September. It will be a tour.

Going to Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto.

I understand they are very strict on OTC and prescription drugs and must get permission to carry some of my Rx meds.

Also....any recommendations on manners, foods, customs, money would be helpful!

Also, need to find out about visa requirements. Only going for 10 days - 2 weeks.

Sakaezushi in umeda, Osaka has horse sushi if you want to try it, for 128 yen a plate.

Also, visit my former home of Arashiyama in Kyoto.

I can’t imagine Japan Customs having any problem with personal medicines, in the standard-issue pharmacy type bottles, carried in your personal luggage. I’ve certainly never had an issue when going there.

Just being friendly and polite will carry you successfully over most of the world. They do like to bow in formal and service interactions, or nodding your head just slightly and but respectfully at the end of an interaction will always go over well.

Be sure to search out the best local ramen and other restaurants. You won’t be disappointed!!

I think this is the tour company we’ve chosen. But we like to get off the beaten path and do our own stuff from time to time. They allow that.

A visa beforehand is unnecessary.

When you’re there, get a penguin card, aka “suica.” It’s a metadebit card that you can use practically anywhere. Otherwise just get yen cash; dollars are useless except on military bases.

I can’t speak to the medicines; I have wondered about that myself if I ever recuperate enough to take one more trip before I go to my Lord.

If you’re going on a tour, you will probably not have to worry about anything. There are no food issues (I haven’t had Tojo’s revenge in nearly 50 years there). Expect things to be cramped and crowded except for the countryside outside the big cities, and if you can spend a day in a small town there, do it, that’s where the real Japan legacy is.

It will be wonderful!

Learn the Tipping Customs

As I understand it, tipping in Japan isn't done. It's better to not tip for services.

I’ve learned a lot about Japan from the You Tube channel “Abroad in Japan”. It’s a British guy who’s lived there 10 plus years and travels all over the country (especially off the beaten path) and also has lots of videos about the food. He’s also pretty funny.
