New research finds that 14-hour fasting improves hunger, mood and sleep

Eating in a ten-hour window is associated with higher energy and mood and lower hunger levels, results from the largest UK community science study of its kind shows.

Intermittent fasting (IF), or restricting your food consumption to a set window, is a popular weight loss regime. A ten-hour window means limiting your daily eating schedule to ten hours and fasting for the remaining 14 hours. For example, if you eat your first bite at 9am, you must eat your last bite by 7pm.

Despite some IF advocates commonly promoting restrictive eating windows as low as six hours, findings detailed in the abstract show even eating within a less restrictive window of ten hours still has positive health benefits, such as changes in mood, energy and hunger.

Those who were consistent with their eating window had greater benefits than those who varied their eating window day to day.

Dr. Sarah Berry said, "This is the largest study outside of a tightly controlled clinic to show that intermittent fasting can improve your health in a real world setting. What's really exciting is that the findings show that you don't have to be very restrictive to see positive results: a ten-hour eating window, which was manageable for most people."

37,545 people on the ZOE Health app completed the core intervention period of three weeks. Participants were asked to eat as they normally would for the first week and then to adhere to a ten-hour eating window for two weeks.

More than 36,231 participants opted for additional weeks, and 27,371 users were classified as highly engaged. Highly engaged participants were 78% female, with a mean age of 60 and a BMI of 25.6.

Participants with a longer eating window before the intervention saw an even greater benefit to their health.

my dad is on one- He gets about 3-4 hours sleep then is wide awake till morning many times- The work does help for sure- but not as active in wintertime unless it snows-

The ring sounds interesting- I will definitely check that out- it coulb be that the cpap isn’t calibrated right and is not effective enough-

No- no issues there- not sure what the problem is- they wake up at certain times each night throughout the night- seems pretty regular pattern of waking- but it’s not to use bathroom- they just can’t get back to lsep for awhile- and when they do, it’s just another 20 minutes or so of sleep- then awake again-

“He gets about 3-4 hours sleep then is wide awake till morning many times”

I sympathize with your dad. I’m 72 and that happens to me, too, even with the CPAP. Sometimes I can get back to sleep after being awake an hour or so. Oftentimes during that hour I’ll take the CPAP mask off (I still find it annoying) and immediately the problems return when I doze off for another two or three hours).

“Not as active in wintertime” — definitely agree with that. I did several hours of close-to-final pruning and yard cleaning yesterday and filled the truck with six 50 pound bags again. Then we got a slight snowfall this morning, so it just MIGHT be the last yard work for the season.

The gym is good for keeping the activity up when the ground is snow-covered.

“...thought it ‘helped with sleep’, but was only kidding myself”

Yep!

I also thought Unisom helped with sleep, but the sleep doctor said it is REALLY BAD for sleep. However, if I get in a two to four day bout of three- to four-hour nights, I turn to Unisom to break that horrible cycle. But fortunately that’s only once or twice a year. It seems that once I can break that cycle, it’s broken for quite a while.

Best of luck to your dad.

Best wishes, FRiend, I’m glad your folks are still around. And right, any movement at all is good. One of my Mom’s worst problems was falling, she walked inside on perfectly level floors almost all the time. Outside and in her 80’s, her ankles were so weak she would go down easily.

Do you know the dosage? I started with 150 mg but had to back off to 100 because it was extremely difficult to get up at night for the john. But another interesting thing is that “The Traz” cuts the number of times I have to get up from 2 or 3 to 1.

Sometimes they prescribe only 50 mg when used for insomnia (as opposed to depression). 50 is inadequate for me.

Thanks- We will try the unisom- my mom takes benadryl from time to time and says it works pretty good- but it’s only for short term, and there are some reports is might bring on alzheimers or aggravate it- but walking arou8nd like a zombie all the time isn’t very fun either- so she breaks down and takes it

Then all the children of Israel, and all the people, went up, and came unto the house of God, and wept, and sat there before the Lord, and fasted that day until even, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the Lord. (Judges 20:26)

And they mourned, and wept, and fasted until even, for Saul, and for Jonathan his son, and for the people of the Lord, and for the house of Israel; because they were fallen by the sword. (2 Samuel 1:12)

The longer i fast and the less i eat the less hungry i feel.
If i start eating a lot the more hungry i feel soon after.

Yeah, I would not take any anticholinergic drugs routinely.
