This grocery chain is doing away with self-checkout — the reason why might surprise you

Customers of popular British grocery chain Booths found out this week that the company is scrapping self-checkout lanes, just six years after rolling them out in their 28 tony stores, mostly located in the north of England.

The decision goes against a decades-long trend, where human beings are increasingly becoming a rarity at the front of supermarkets and other big box retailers — a shift most industry watchers agree is unstoppable.

“We’re not great fans of self-checkouts,” Booths managing director Nigel Murray told U.K. trade publication The Grocer. “We pride ourselves on great customer service and you can’t do that through a robot.” The do-it-yourself approach first seemed like an appealing way of managing labor costs and increasing efficiency, Murray said. But he also noted that the technology

I won't use self-checkout at all, because they don't offer me a discount for doing their work for then.
LOL! When the cashiers don't bag it for her, my wife crosses her arms and stares at them.

I like self checkout, especially pumping my own gas. I managed a few gas stations. The attendants had at least a dozen ways to steal from customers and they lost gas caps. At the supermarket I can check out much more quickly and I don’t get 15 bags for 15 items. I also use the “wave your phone at the device” method to pay.

You still have bags?!

Lol. Some self-check registers ASK if we brought our own. I’ve never said “yes”.

I don’t miss checkout people nagging me about my purchases or trying to get me to sign up to be tracked in exchange for some discounts.

Never stick your ATM card in anything other than a bank ATM.

I agree! I hate self checkouts. I will not use them if I can avoid it.

Amazon stores only have one or two people and their job is stocking. Sales are based on items taken off the shelves. Guessing you have to have a card on file to shop there. Haven’t read much about them lately though.

I used to use some of the ones at Walmart, but, since they've renovated the store and taken away the long conveyer belts at the self-serve checkouts, I've quit doing so. I used to be able to load my cart on the conveyer and then check myself out. Now, I have to take one item at a time from the cart, scan it, and then try to figure out a way to sit a cartload of items on the floor until I get an empty cart to put them in. That sucks wet mud-turtles.

If food is cheap and good—I will self check out—they will need the money for armed guards to prevent shoplifting.

“The self check out is nothing new but I always seem to get stuck behind the retards that don’t know hiw to use them.”

I NEVER use self checkout unless I find out too late it is the only option available. I’ve even left the cart and walked out of the store rather than fight the damn machine.

Maybe I’m a retard, maybe I just missed the training. EVERY time I try to use one of those things, no matter where, they ALWAYS malfunction somehow or tell me to wait for “assistance” so some cashier can come and override something, verify my age, or the item somehow didn’t match some parameter or other.

Sorry to bother you by causing a delay in checking out, but really, checking out isn’t my job.

Painful to realize that those same morons vote.

“ We can run an entire cart through like it’s nothing.”

I hear that they’re hiring at Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s.

I read an article somewhere that said self-checkouts were expensive to maintain and broke down a lot. Lots of stores rethinking them. Also they can’t be policed without a person there watching, so they are still having to pay people to not scan stuff.

I’ll use one when I have just a few items - when I have a buggy full I want someone else to scan them.
