Customers of popular British grocery chain Booths found out this week that the company is scrapping self-checkout lanes, just six years after rolling them out in their 28 tony stores, mostly located in the north of England.
The decision goes against a decades-long trend, where human beings are increasingly becoming a rarity at the front of supermarkets and other big box retailers — a shift most industry watchers agree is unstoppable.
“We’re not great fans of self-checkouts,” Booths managing director Nigel Murray told U.K. trade publication The Grocer. “We pride ourselves on great customer service and you can’t do that through a robot.” The do-it-yourself approach first seemed like an appealing way of managing labor costs and increasing efficiency, Murray said. But he also noted that the technology

I won’t use self-checkout at all, because they don’t offer me a discount for doing their work for then.
But...but...it’s keeping prices down! GUFFAW!
I agree. I don't like the [forced] chat with the cashier with the canned questions, and I especially don't like the bagger squeezing everything in a bag just to save a bag.
Self Check out is great. It may not be worthwhile for a weeks groceries but it is quick and easy for a few items including beer and wine
I always do self-checkout when available because I like a good looking person to scan my items.
Only place I prefer a cashier over self checkout is Tractor Supply. Because they usually call me “sweetie” or “honey”.
I was at Lowe’s last night to make a small purchase. There were no live cashiers.

Our local Lowe’s still has humans in the garden and contractor sections.
Booths is like that. Kind of the way Giant Eagle used to be when labor was cheap. Or A&P. Or even IGA in the very early days.
Our local Walmart went self checkout a couple of years ago. Just got back from there. Lots of the self checkout isles are now gone replaced by checkers.
I like self-checkout. Pretty much all big stores have it now, but I used to avoid the local Publix because they didn’t have it and go to Kroger (unless I was getting one of those great Publix subs, do they still have those?).
Lord a'mercy, yes, and most of them under 11 bucks -- at least the classic chicken nugs rings up that cheap.
If you want it for lunch you have to order ahead, and even then I waited 20 mins last time (but we had 3 on the line so I didn't care). Took half to the beach and had the other half for breakfast.
Why ATM? Isn’t that a risky way to pay at a gas station?
I love the people who have 300.00 worth of groceries, stands there while they are being scanned by cashier, she gives the total, they whip out their checkbook and start filling it out. Ughhhh, then it’s I need your Driver’s license, digs for that, gets scanned.
You still have bags?!
The commies took them away from us here in Colorado -unless you want to pay ten cents per bag.
When I go shopping for groceries now, I use a big, plastic tub with bold print on it screaming, “COMMIES SUCK!” on the sides.
I’ve had a few compliments over it.
She was also in Caddy Shack. Very cute.
Not a fan of self-checkouts for the price of the food by God someone better be packing it for me.
Heck I went to Lowes and spent two and a half hours trying to buy a roll around tool box. It was on a shelf and the only (they said) guy who could use the fork lift was in a meeting.
Evidently passing gas with the boss is more important than a $450.00 sale.
Still trying to break the 15 minute checkout there.
