Possible hidden fortune in $2 bill has people searching in forgotten places

WASHINGTON (TND) — Now is a good time to check that $2 bill stuffed away in a drawer or old wallet.

The unique currency has been in circulation since the 1860s but some people are finding them to be upwards of $4,500, according to U.S. Currency Auctions.

Several editions of the bill have been in circulation with the most recent being designed in 1963, the U.S. Treasury Department notes. Some feature Thomas Jefferson's face, Alexander Hamilton or America's first secretary of the treasury.

A bill's worth depends on several factors including if it was in circulation.

Uncirculated bills with red or brown seals can be worth thousands, according to U.S. Currency Auctions. Serial numbers and the condition of the bill are also important to consider.

According to MarketWatch, if a serial number is printed on the left and ride sight side of the bill starts with the number one and was printed in 1976, the bill would be worth more than $20,000.

Collectors are also interested in serial numbers that are "solid," all of the same digits, or "ladder," digits in ascending order.

As of 2022, there were 108.3 million $2 notes in circulation, the U.S. Treasury’s Bureau of Engraving and Printing reported.

However, the notes are still being printed and circulated which means most $2 bills are worth exactly that.

LOL! Yep. He apparently is. I quit watching NASCAR several years ago. But I have fond memories of hanging around my Dad and uncles when they listened to the race on the radio (while drinking copious amounts of beer and playing poker).

Dang! I have a 1976 $2 bill, but the first digit of the serial number is zero. I also have kept a 1963 red seal $2 bill for a long time, though it's worth only $5 or so because of its condition.

I was in Orlando a few weeks ago. It was way too packed with people. Desantis has done too good of a job with Florida.

(I wish he’d concentrate on being the best governor in US history rather than being President)

Going to check my stash! Mom sends these $2 bills in all holiday cards. Knowing our luck, she’s most likely mailed the ‘family fortune’ on. ;)

You can make a money pad, too. Get a stack of about 25 new bills, cut a cardboard backing the same size as the bills, then use rubber cement to glue a strip of gauze to the ends of the bills and the cardboard, just like a notepad. When you pay for something, you just whip out the pad and peel off a few.

From my very limited research, bill with “4 of a kind” are worth more than face value, especially if the number is 7. In certain parts of Asia, 7 is a lucky number and people do collect them.

shockingly I actually did have a 1976 one in my stack, but it didn’t start with a 1 on the serial number.

Oh well, back to work!

Once took the ferry across Lake Champlain
in VT & NY and fare was $9.50 so my
$10 bill got me a JFK half-dollar
in change. Not all that common but
I spent it soon enough.

Interesting. I asked about $2 bills not long ago, and the bank branch here in The Boonies said they don’t normally have any on hand. Some young folks working in retail think they’re counterfeit. :^)

I have 3 or 4 sheets of these things that have never been cut into individual bills. Guess I better check to see if they are worth anything!
