College Film Major in California - conservative? Oxymoron?
11/11/2023 | Self

Looking for Freeper advice. My son is applying to colleges that have a Film major. He wants to be a producer. He wants to start his own business. We are in California, and you wouldn't think that CA is veteran friendly, but California does grant tuition waivers for all California public colleges for 0%+ disabled Vets. I'm afraid that some more liberal colleges will require the Covid VAX. I'm adamant about my kids not getting that vax. Any Freepers in the Film industry? Is there such a thing as a conservative or semi-conservative public college in California?

LOL WOW! You too! I’ve been impressed by your comments on this post. I auditioned for CU Boulder 20 years ago but they said I needed to be composing at Danny Elfman levels before they would admit me. What the heck! What would I need college for? Nice psyop you’ve got there guys. I stuck it out to graduation at another school in Denver but if I had the chance to go back in time and advise my younger self I would say cut your losses, let everyone telling you to get a degree, your pastor, your parents and grandparents they can have their college funds for themselves and build what you want to do on your own. Only this year after years of picking the pieces up and architecting my life have I been able to start street performing. If this is as far as I ever get with music I will be happy.

I understand that you have a great deal going on tuition—but the odds of a film major getting to use that major for a successful life as a film producer are....debatable for sure.

Here is a lengthy reddit discussion with lots of details:

Make sure he fully understands the pros and cons.

Even if free college with an incorrect major represents a significant opportunity cost.

In other words—is there something better he should be doing with his time—including another major?

Thank you - and thank you for sharing that! They are outrageous to tell you something like that! Yeah, they’d LOVE to take you in, already having Elfman or Williams talent so that they could take your money, take you in to their obsolete crappy program, spit you out, then take 100% credit for your talent! That just pisses me off. I just hope you’re keeping up with your music in some way.

Have you used your benefit? If you qualify for the Post 9/11 GI Bill, you can transfer your benefit to your son, including the stipend and access to the Yellow Ribbon Program.

By the way, what got him interested in production?

Good question. I think it goes back to 5th and 6th grade. Youtube was a big deal and about half of his 6th grade classmates all said they wanted to be youtubers when the grew up. Well he had made his own youtube channel in 5th grade, maybe earlier, and he would make Minecraft videos on how to build things. He just figured it out by himself. He found a program to record his game play and used his headset / mic to narrate and explain how to make buildings and stuff in Minecraft.
He took some digital animation production classes in Junior high. Covid hit so he did online classes most of his freshman year, but still took video production. His sophomore year he was back at school and the video production class does the High School News that they broadcasted every morning and he was first up as anchor, with green screen and teleprompter. Part of the class was recording school sports and editing highlights for the news.
They posted the news on youtube, and I saw an announcement for casting calls for the drama clubs Fiddler on the Roof. I said if he didn’t go and tryout his late grandma would be rolling in her grave. She got us the video 5 years back and we probably watched it a hundred times, so he knew all the songs.
So he walked on and auditioned and got the part of Motel.
He’s had some other parts, been stage manager twice, was in a production with the local theater group. He got thrown into a small part there an hour before show time when a guy came down with covid.
He is the student assistant for his video production class now, and the teacher he had before, left. So he is kindda running the news now and is assisting the new teacher tremendously. He’s president of the Video Production Club. He’s tall, 6’1”, handsome and charismatic. 4.0 gpa.
I think I’m rambling on now... I’m just really proud of him.

Thanks for your reply LS. This left me a little confused though...
“First, it’s late. Your son needed to be looking for this person BEFORE entering.”
You’re referring to Who he wants to learn under? Honestly how the heck to you do that? How did you find the flamer guy? What were you looking for?
My son had an English teacher that wrote a book. He liked the book and wanted to make it into a movie. Is that the kind of person you’re talking about? Or you mean research the professor’s at each college? How can you tell a good one from a bad one?

You’re welcome! He seems like a nice fella in his wife’s documentary and he does talk a little about his production company.

“I wanted to be the next John Williams...”
My son loves John Williams... He took Violin for a year when he was like 10... His Grandma got him into it. He played the Star Wars theme for his recital. Fiddler on the roof was one of his favorite movies and he figured out how to to play the intro just by listening to it. He knows how to read music a little still.
I’m sorry for your horrific experience... thank you for sharing it though. I will share this thread with him.... who knows, maybe he will join FR and become a 3rd generation Freeper.

I went to the film school at Houston Community College because that was the nearest film program to me. But it will be different based on where your son is living.

It saves a lot of money to live with your parents while doing this (and community colleges don’t typically have dorms anyway). So, I’d start by looking at what is offered at any community colleges nearby.

The film industry is about to undergo radical changes (like most industries) due to AI. I expect that most movie and TV show content 5 years from now will be AI-generated. Motion capture, LED walls, camera tracking, 3d modeling and animation, and using AI for other various tasks will be valuable skills. The ability to raise money will always be the most valuable skill, and that’s not really taught in college.
