Investor who bought Wyoming Brook coal mine sight-unseen for $2M learns it may contain $37BILLION worth of 'rare earth' minerals used for semiconductors, missiles and solar cells

A 71-year-old investor who bought an old Wyoming coal mine sight-unseen for $2million has learned that it may contain $37 billion worth of 'rare earth' minerals.

Randall Atkins, the CEO of Ramaco Rescources, bought the Brook Mine in Sheridan 12 years ago - but it wasn't until years later that researchers checked if the ground contained elements that are used for semiconductors, missiles and solar cells.

He was shocked to find out that his mine may contain the largest rare-earth deposit in the United States - and the materials may be worth 18,500 times what he paid for the land. The last US mine to be found with such rare materials was found in 1952.

Atkins' 6,000 acres of land in the Powder River Basin has tested positive for gallium and germanium, and estimates show that there could be 1.1 million metric tons of oxides in just a quarter of plot, reports the Wall Street Journal.

This is compared to the US average annual consumption of 8,300 metric tons.

Neodymium, praseodymium, dysprosium and terbium have also been found.

Magnets made from neodymium are used in hard disc drives and mobile phones, while praseodymium is used in high-strength alloys in aircraft engines.

Dysprosium is used to make control rods in nuclear reactors, and terbium is used in low-energy lightbulbs and mercury lamps.

His rare earth elements are now being sold for more than $1 million per metric ton.

Kentucky-born Atkins and his team are now hoping to mine the elements, process them into what's needed for green energy - including for motors in electric vehicles and offshore wind turbines.

Ramaco Rescources, which is worth $620 million, typically focuses on mining metallurgical coal. It was Randall's father, Orin Atkins, who built Ashland Oil into a multinational energy conglomerate.

It takes decades to develop these things. Cf. NioCorp and Elk Creek development in Nebraska.

Good luck getting a permit from this government to mine it.

Our company, Wholesale Graphene, is already on this and out of the prototype manufacturing stage onto a full manufacturing plant. We could be in large scale business in 5 months. Just waiting for $5 million investment to come in, which we are negotiating now.

That sounds interesting. Keep us posted as to your company’s progress (maybe just using this thread).

That’s a great recollection.

I remember in high school all the rifles that would be in the back of pickup trucks in the student parking area during hunting season. Nobody thought anything of it.

We are doing really exciting stuff. I’m using the article posted here to crack heads on some potential joint venture partners to get them off their larded asses. We have better graphene/rare earth separation process. I checked the Ramaco patent and it doesn’t conflict.

That’s fantastic! I look forward to hearing more about it as it progresses.

This explains the graphene process. What is left from the coal is silicates and any rare earths.

Speaking for myself only: artificial voices annoy me immensely. Your PR folks didn't pick the worst one out there, but the one they did pick is still pretty bad.

Hire a voice actor. Heck ... have an employee talent contest. That's how the original "Bitchin' Betty" got the gig.

Mining and processing the extraction. The Chinese do not give a crap about pollution so they can can keep costs down.

If you think that artificial voice is bad, you should hear mine.I did that video on zero budget.

OK ...

I’ll just say I’d rather hear a “bad” human voice than a “good” artificial voice.

IMO. FWIW. YMMV.

Visual content is good, though.

Hey, feedback is much appreciated, I know voice is a problem. I did the only biography of Harry Reid, and did a documentary that was too dangerous to release. You can listen to my real voice here (hint, I just found out that Hunter and Joe were involved in some of this, so this may end up in the ‘news’ again).

Good documentary. And seriously ... even a “bad” human voice is still human. For me, at least, that’s a lot easier to listen to than a robot voice. I can’t speak for others.

As to the content ... No! Hunter and Joe involved with Harry Reid’s gambling and corruption? I’m shocked! Shocked, I tell you!

Since Hamas/PLO love to dig and live deep underground, any Hamas Hezbollah etc caught doing crimes in America could be sentenced to a few years digging the mine. It cannot be categorized as cruel or unusual punishment if they already choose to live that way.

Loads of it. Two million metric tons that we are sending to Red China under the mineral trade name “ding bat drug bak.”
