NATIONAL SANDWICH DAY
Whether you stack it high or thin, National Sandwich Day on November 3rd recognizes one of America's favorite lunch items.
#NationalSandwichDay
The sandwich is believed to be the namesake of John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich, following the claim that he was the inventor of the sandwich. No matter who invented it, we celebrate every kind of sandwich.
While the modern sandwich is believed to be named after John Montagu, the exact circumstances of its invention and original use are the subject of debate. There is a rumor in a contemporary travel book titled Tour to London, by Pierre Jean Grosley, that formed the popular myth that bread and meat sustained Lord Sandwich at the gambling table. It is said that Lord Sandwich was a very conversant gambler and did not take the time to have a meal during his long hours playing at the card table. When hungry, he would ask his servants to bring him slices of meat between two slices of bread. This practice was a habit that was well known to his gambling friends who soon began to order “the same as Sandwich,” and from this, the sandwich was born.
N.A.M. Rodger, who wrote Sandwich’s biography, suggests that because of Sandwich’s commitment to the navy, politics, and the arts, the first sandwich was more likely to have been consumed at his work desk.
Before being known as sandwiches, the food seems just to have been called bread and meat or bread and cheese.
Types of Sandwiches
In the United States alone, we have some pretty delicious sandwich inventions. The cheesesteak and sloppy joe are American classics. Don't forget the muffuletta or the Monte Cristo. We love our Po boys and grilled cheese, pork tenderloins, and po'boys, too. However, we can't forget some of these other absolutely delicious options:
BLT
Club
Dagwood
French Dip
Peanut Butter and Jelly
Pilgrim

Sandwich FAQ
Q. How do I keep my sandwich from getting soggy when I pack it for lunch? A. Spread a little bit of butter on each slice before adding the other ingredients. The butter will act as a barrier to prevent moisture from the other ingredients from making your bread soggy. Other options include:
Pack the juicer ingredients (like tomatoes) separately and add them to your sandwich at work. Choose a sturdier bread to make your sandwich. Add a layer of lettuce, bean sprouts or cheese to act as a barrier between the bread and the juicier ingredients. Q. How can I spice up my sandwich routine? A. Visit your local deli and try different meats and cheeses for your sandwiches. Skip the iceberg lettuce and mix it up with butterhead, romaine, arugula, or radicchio. You can also add seasonings to your spread. If you like mayo, add some garlic, lime juice, and sriracha for something different. Substitute the mayo for avocado seasoned with a garlic herb mix.
Q. Are there other sandwich days on the calendar? A. Yes! Check out these tasty holidays:

Yes, but it’s a small place, so best to order online and pick up...................
Lagniappe has tablecloths.................
I like tablecloths sometimes. Even if eating a sandwich.
It does look like a hole in the wall kind of place.
Not so long ago it was a Biker Bar................
My brother lived in Clearwater, FL for awhile and while visiting I went to a place that served grouper sandwiches. I'm from the Midwest and never had one before. I ended up eating the blackened version every chance I got while there. Tasty...;O)
I like it in MOSTLY HARMLESS (The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy) where the hapless Arthur Dent crashes on a primitive planet and loses all his technology. He is useless to the tribe that takes him in, until they see him make a sandwich. Then, with his skills as the “Sandwich Maker”, he becomes a valued member of the society.
Don’t mix sandwiches with rock climbing.
Maybe that’s why I don’t recognize it. We traverse the Miracle Strip Pkwy frequently when we’re there.
I’m a native of Florida that moved away for love. Any fresh fish or seafood you can get your hands on when you’re down there is something to behold. Don’t get me wrong. I love all sorts of meats and vegetables, but fresh seafood isn’t to be taken lightly. The sooner you get it off the boat, the better it is!
It’s ‘front’ is 90° off US98 so unless you know where it is you probably won’t see it. It’s downtown, which is amess right now because of the new bridge construction, which will take another 4 years. Will be even worse in the summer................
We’ve been to that nearby park a time or two when going downtown, so I have a feeling for where it is. Usually we are mostly down at the beach. I don’t remember the bridge being under construction when we were there around Labor Day.
My sister from St. Pete says she thinks it’s neat that construction projects have a firm start and stop up here. That’s because they are hard to do over winter. Sometimes they are ongoing, but not usually. The orange barrels start disappearing right about now, and then they crop back up as soon as it warms up again.
I am a big fan of sandwiches. So much so...I don’t think I have a favorite.
Also...please add chips and a pickle.
That’s a great idea to have sides of chips and a pickle.
For Cuban sandwich lovers, have a side of yellow rice topped with black beans. Yum!
My Cubans look very much like that! So much goodness in them! The bread is key! But so are the pork, the ham, the pickle, the cheese, the mustard. Did I forget anything? I need to put Cubans on our menu sometime soon.
We’re having ribs from hubbie’s secret recipe tonight. Been working on them low and slow all day. Fresh collards have been cooking for hours, Dilled red potatoes for a side. And cucumbers to help with the heat. Delish!
Y’all know how to eat! LOL
Yes, we do.
I think you might call us “foodies” if it means what I think. We love to cook, and try to excel at that for each other and guests when they come.
My father was in the restaurant business for a very short time. Never gave up his passion though the restaurant went out of business. Once we made it past the poverty of being bankrupt, I learned to love to cook and bake. Hubby loves to grill. Our three grown children have all kept up with this passion.
We know we have to watch our calories, and we get daily exercise, but there are so many ways that food is love. You can make those foods healthy and be loving. Yet, there are times when the good old calories feel so good. Everything in moderation, right?
