After boys shared faked pornographic images made of female classmates, both the school and the local police began investigating
When girls at Westfield High School in New Jersey found out boys were sharing nude photos of them in group chats, they were shocked, and not only because it was an invasion of privacy. The images weren’t real.
Students said one or more classmates used an online tool powered by artificial intelligence to make the images, then shared them with others. The discovery has sparked uproar in Westfield, an affluent town outside New York City.
Digitally altered or faked images and videos have exploded along with the availability of free or cheap AI tools. While celebrity likenesses from Oprah Winfrey to Pope Francis have drawn media attention, the overwhelming majority of faked images are pornographic, experts say.
The lack of clarity on such images’ legality—and how or whether to punish their makers—has parents, schools and law enforcement running to catch up as AI speeds ahead.
The high school confirmed the incident in an email to parents, but a Westfield Public Schools spokeswoman declined to provide details on the number of students involved or to confirm whether any disciplinary action had been taken, citing student confidentiality.
Some Westfield parents said their daughters have felt humiliated and powerless, and worry about damage to the girls should the images surface later. And they are upset that no resolution is forthcoming.
Even among parents, there is no consensus. In a local Facebook group, some called for harsh punishment for whoever created the images. Others deemed it a youthful transgression that should be forgiven.
The debate and its aftermath are likely to continue for months. Westfield police are investigating, and a state senator has asked county prosecutors to look into the case.

Maybe they didn’t know beforehand. Why should they not assume it was an invasion of privacy (certainly it’s akin to identity theft)?
My niece and nephew are grads of that school, not many years ago. If it were my daughter, I’d be pissed off.
AI is just Photoshop on steroids.

How can it be an invasion of privacy if it isn't real?
This is an example of crazy things you can now do with AI

That ad freaked me out. I was like you thinking now it’s not real.
Yea, well nobody is going to do anything. Girls and parents can't even summon the courage to protest boys in sports, like simply stop participating and holding parent/girl athlete rallies at the various schools, to which there have been none. None meaning everyone, as everyone should be protesting this crap.
This cant be deemed a crime. It’s just Art. Not real. Im sure they’ll mske this illegal because they are thugs but it’s not. I wouldnt like it if it were done “to” my daughter or someone close to me but....that shouldn’t make it illegal. They are going to use all of this to continue stripping away rights. The only punishment to the kids should be having nude or pornographic images in school.
of course that ‘s the excuse.
If i drew a picture of your daughter in the nude should I be punished? Let’s keep in mind I have never met your daughter in real life nor have i seen her nude. Making that illegal is utter madness. It’s only a matter of time before they can “see” your thoughts. You can pretend to be innocent but you’d probably be in big big trouble.
Fake porn...now that’s going too far !!!
It's a fact. Time immemorial.
I understand the creative kiddies can actually put faces on porn chicks in videos. They call them “deep fakes.” Interesting times. We had Playboy.
Did he pick the wrong treat? Just curious here...
Criminal laws are no replacement for basic decency and civility.
Well Said.
The law still prohibits fake child porn and prosecutes it as such.
Good thing too, otherwise we’d be awash in very convincing and legal AI child porn.
Mark my words though, this law will be challenged under the argument that no child was sexually assaulted and therefore no crime occurred.
A growing number of degenerates are increasingly comfortable in their desire to sexualize children and they’re pushing for the laws to protect them.
Problem?
Does child pornography have to be of real children? If someone produces “humane” child porn, all AI, no actual children harmed, is that legal? What about the faces of real children, on AI bodies?
Hostile environment, sexual harassment.
Sounds similar to boys in girls locker rooms - which is deemed A.O.K.
Does the AI ever generate saggy boobs? Going to guess it doesn’t. How about “bannana breast”? Flat chested?
