Donald Trump wanted to pull the United States out of NATO during his first term, but was repeatedly talked out of it by senior administration officials. For a possible second term in the White House, the 2024 Republican presidential frontrunner is already discussing how he could actually get it done, if his demands aren’t met by NATO. He and his policy-wonk allies are also gaming out how he could dramatically wind down American involvement to merely a “standby” position in NATO, in Trump’s own words.
When the former president has privately discussed the United States’ role in the transatlantic military alliance this year, Trump has made clear that he doesn’t want the upper ranks of a second administration to be staffed by “NATO lovers,” according to two sources who’ve heard him make such comments. The ex-president has made these kinds of jabs at the longstanding alliance during conversations related to the ongoing Russian war in Ukraine.
Trump, the sources say, has continued to express an openness to pulling the U.S. out of NATO altogether.

President Joe Biden’s reelection campaign is attacking former President Donald Trump’s over a new report alleging that he wants to withdraw from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in a second term, claiming it “underscores what we already know to be true about Donald Trump: The only person he cares about is himself.”
“Donald Trump’s threats to weaken NATO and side with Vladimir Putin undermine America’s strength on the global stage and threaten our national security. As president, Donald Trump spent four years cozying up to dictators and making our country less safe,” said Biden campaign spokesman Ammar Moussa in a statement to the Washington Examiner.

It’s not illegal for the President to withdraw from treaties that fail to serve US interests.
And? It’s probably the best for the US to pull out of NATO if they do not carry their weight. Russia has been delegated to third world status, we do not need radical Islamic countries participating and that money we contribute can be used for our own national security.
NATO in its present form is obsolete!
NATO is an anachronistic organization that has served its purpose. The Soviet Union no longer exists. Europe dwarfs Russia economically, demographically, and militarily. They can organize their own defense.
We are broke.

Being a civlian employee of the NATO staff is one of the best do-nothing gigs going. Great pay and vacation time, tax free, generous housing allowances and paid travel to your home of record. You get to live like a king in some of the most glamorous cities in Europe. Now if you have ambitions to accomplish something in life, well, you need not apply.
