When You Go to Deplane And Your Plane Starts Lifting Up, Way Up
Independent Sentinel ^ | By M Dowling - October 25, 20231

This is just another everyday story where your plane tips into the air as you’re trying to disembark, and then it flips back again. Fortunately, no one was hurt in this incident. JetBlue said the problem was a weight shift.

It does resemble a DC-3...

I noticed that as well. From the front, I thought it was. But then I saw the jet engines. Still, same type of nose.

Nothing new, when they stretched the 737 fuselage it required a ( as we call it) a donkey dick to be installed by the gate crew on arrival. A long steel support attached at the tail skid…

KC-135 had one too.

The problem is that someone didn’t support the rear of the plane when they possibly should have. I used to work for FedEx and one of their DC-10s “wheelied” at LAX because the ground crew forgot to place the rear support under the tail of the aircraft (this happened back around 1990 IIRC). Cargo planes are severely out of balance during loading and unloading. I would imagine passenger planes are too, to a lesser degree.

Lots of airplanes have a tailstand that’s deployed during loading and stowed once the engines have been started.

The weight & balance folk like for the CG of a commercial airplane to be near its aft limit. That’s because the tailplane ordinarily flies down (it makes lift in the wrong direction) to keep the a/c level. But lift is directly proportional to drag, so if you can reduce how much upside-down lift the tailplane needs to make, it improves both efficiency and airspeed.

It also reduces the margin of stability, but you can’t have your Kate and Edith, too.

It is the opening sequence to the television show Fantasy Island. See link at image.
