While the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that everyone 6 months and older should receive the annual flu vaccine, most people haven’t – at least not yet. Only 22.7% of adults and 20.8% of children have gotten the flu shot this fall, according to CDC data from October 14.
Why is it important for everyone eligible to receive the flu shot? How effective is it? Do people who have had the flu before still need a shot? Why is it necessary every year? When is the best time to get it? And what else should people do to stay healthy as the weather gets colder?
To help us with these questions, I spoke with our CNN Wellness medical expert, Dr. Leana Wen. Dr. Wen is an emergency physician and professor of health policy and management at the George Washington University Milken Institute School of Public Health. She previously served as Baltimore’s health commissioner.

Um, no.
True story: I know a guy who got the flu jab a couple of weeks ago. The next day he started to feel ill and, for reasons not explained to me, he ended up testing positive for COVID and was compelled to take 10 days off from work.
He insists that he had COVID, not the flu from the jab.
I couldn’t make that up if I tried.

I get the flu shot. It’s a true vaccine, raised in eggs. Been that way for 75 years. Had one infection in the 30 years I’ve been getting the shot.

But, regardless, I’ll share a second data point: I have never had a flu shot and have never had fly in 60 years and counting.

I was required to get the flu shot during my military career. About 1 year out of 3, I then got the flu. Since retiring, I’ve had the flu twice and COVID once in 15 years. Think I’ll keep on skipping it.
I don’t trust big pharma.
Well, I never took a flu shot in my adulthood. Got the flu once. I’m in my mid 60s. So.......?
Someone convinced me to get a flu vx back in the ‘80s.
Got jab. A couple of week later, I caught the flu.
Haven’t had a jab since. No flu either.
No right thinking American will ever take a vaccine again!
