"Bad" cholesterol isn't the only culprit linked with a higher risk of cardiovascular disease, according to a trio of recent studies showing that a different kind of cholesterol is also a strong risk factor for people worldwide.
Remnant cholesterol (RC) was confirmed as a strong risk factor for coronary heart disease, heart attacks and stroke, the largest of the studies showed. RC is produced from the metabolism of triglycerides.
Using data from almost one million participants—the findings are the first to show, on a large scale, a causal link between high RC and risk of cardiovascular illness.
"This tells us that the health risk posed by high RC is of greater concern than traditional LDL cholesterol," says Paolo Raggi.
The researchers found that having elevated RC led to a 1.5 times higher risk for coronary heart disease, a 1.6 times higher risk of heart attack and a 1.2 times higher risk of stroke.
Proctor, Eurich and their teams drew on data from the Alberta's Tomorrow Project.
They found that people with heart disease had 15% higher levels of RC in their blood, but not LDL-C levels, which were much lower, at 7%.
The results also showed that for every increase of one unit of RC in the blood, there was a 150% higher risk of having an event such as a heart attack, versus a 73% higher risk for LDL-C.
"LDL-C, in this case, isn't useful to predict future risk because people are possibly on medication," says Proctor.
A related study exploring diabetes showed similar results.
The researchers found that compared to those without the disease, people with diabetes had 22% higher levels of RC. They were also 30% more likely to be on cholesterol-lowering medication, and consequently had 23% lower levels of LDL-C.

Read “The great Cholesterol Myth”. Bowden and Sinatra. Lots of great info, and real reasons to avoid statins.
How could this number be anything but zero, which mine is?
How did my mother live to 102 after being on statins for 30 years with no problems? And cause of death was not cardiovascular related.
LOL! You are very much an anomaly.
Check out the supplement Berberine. My wife found out about it through Robert Malone’s newsletter. She dropped her overall cholesterol by 40 points in 90 days. Big Pharma doesn’t appreciate the competition and have made several attempts to restrict it’s sale.
I take both a statin and berberine supplement. The berberine is there more for its effect on serum glucose then LDL but if it does that too, great.
I predict that in under 6 months we will start seeing ads for a new resxription medicine which will reduce this.
They are still ignoring homocysteine, I guess.
You don’t have any Triglycerides?
I am hearing RNA shots can give you almost instant heart disease.
My dog’s vet recommended that book, so I bought it. I can’t take statins, so I take Nexletol. It’s not a statin. It dropped my LDL a bunch in three months. Statins are dangerous.
There’s numerous articles and research that has been done which states specifically there’s no difference in people that have high bad cholesterol and cardiac disease and those that don’t have high bad cholesterol and that statins are basically useless and cause more problems.

Some smokers live to old ages. Look at Keith Richards. Always outliers.
Statins are a $1 Trillion drug, with no peer reviewed studies that show people who take them live longer. Yes, cholesterol levels get reduced, but people don't live longer.
Thanks for the tip.
