The Secrets Hamas Knew About Israel’s Military
NYT via DNYUZ ^ | 10/13/2023

The 10 gunmen from Gaza knew exactly how to find the Israeli intelligence hub — and how to get inside.

Ten miles later, they veered off the road into a stretch of woodland, dismounting outside an unmanned gate to a military base. They blew open the barrier with a small explosive charge, entered the base and paused to take a group selfie. Then they shot dead an unarmed Israeli soldier dressed in a T-shirt.

For a moment, the attackers appeared uncertain about where to go next. Then one of them pulled something from his pocket: a color-coded map of the complex.

Reoriented, they found an unlocked door to a fortified building. Once inside, they entered a room filled with computers — the military intelligence hub. Under a bed in the room, they found two soldiers taking shelter.

The gunmen shot both dead.

They provide chilling details of how Hamas, the militia that controls the Gaza Strip, managed to surprise and outmaneuver the most powerful military in the Middle East...

- snip -

With meticulous planning and extraordinary awareness of Israel’s secrets and weaknesses, Hamas and its allies overwhelmed the length of Israel’s front with Gaza, shocking a nation that has long taken the superiority of its military as an article of faith.

Using drones, Hamas destroyed key surveillance and communications towers along the border with Gaza, imposing vast blind spots on the Israeli military. With explosives and tractors, Hamas blew open gaps in the border barricades, allowing 200 attackers to pour through in the first wave and another 1,800 later that day, officials say. On motorcycles and in pickup trucks, the assailants surged into Israel, overwhelming at least eight military bases and waging terrorist attacks against civilians in more than 15 villages and cities.

Just that NO soldier pulling duty should EVER be unarmed. With at least multiple weapons.

Most of America's soldiers are unarmed, most of the time.

President Trump tried to change that. He was defeated by the old technique of Defiance through Compliance.

Something seems off in the response of the Biden Regime statements. It is like they are trying to prove how shocked & outraged they are with every statement. Perhaps it is nothing more than normal leftists trying to show they care... or it could be they have guilty consciences.

The IDF has been very lax for years. I was stationed with the MFO in 2006. On one crossing from the Sinai into Israel the female IDF soldier who checked our passports was wearing flip flops. My team woke her up in the middle of the morning. She looked like a welfare mother of 4, with a cigarette, flip flops, unkept hair and ill fitting OD green uniform. The only thing that distinguished her as a soldier was the M-16 slung across her back.

> I thought all of those Kibbutzes families were armed <

From what I’ve read, kibbutzes do have weapons, but they are locked away in an armory. A “security coordinator” can open the armory, but the average citizen cannot.

There was a post here on FR about one such security coordinator. On her own initiative, she opened the local armory and distributed weapons. That kibbutz was saved.

But suppose she had been hesitant, or was out in some field picking berries?
Then I suppose everyone in the kibbutz would be dead.

I think your latter nailed it, but my take is a bit different:

When I heard ‘day of rage’ I heard ‘green light’ for terror attacks, but tactically such a message comes with a given:

Friday was NOT the day. I hope that I’m wrong. We shall see.

The 10 gunmen from Gaza

Oh, so now, instead of being terrorists, they’re “gunmen”.

Soon, they’ll be “victims”...

I had to LOL when I read articles purporting to issue civilians firearms in the wake of the attacks.

Of course, that was after a facepalm moment...

Agreed. I believe that was the primary intent of the attacks.

Yeah something similar happened in 1973. Israel got complacent and the Arabs took them by surprise. It really hard to keep a constant state of readiness yet that what Israel must do

Israel has military and intel units with specific responsibilities in that regard.

They failed spectacularly.

they found an unlocked door to a fortified building.

That raises a whole lot of questions.

Was this a regular thing?
Was this the only time it happened?
If so, was their an insider plant?
Who was responsible?

Eerily similar to the Uvalde TX school shooting. One unlocked door that was supposed to be locked.

It isn’t hard to observe some place for months or years on end and determine what it is used for. Israel is not that big a place to keep under watch.

What struck me about the overrun intel base was that the gate was open and two young soldiers were hiding under the bed instead of putting up a fight. My understanding of the Mideast is that even if your enemy hates you, by being vigilant and ready to fight at all times you gain their respect, forestalling a lot of their planned violence. This type of unpreparedness invites Hamas and other such groups to take further action as they no longer fear the consequences.
