Yup. Neat toy for the desert, maybe. Hunting in the coastal rainforest? Nope.

Are you wanting a phased plasma rifle in the 40 watt range?

Well let's hope there's electric guns. Gunpowder guns contribute to climate change.

Black Powder,
Rim Fire and
Center Fire are the only ones.
Unless you tried “Electric Matches”
which can be made in the Sink.

The 120mm M256 main gun in the M1A1/M1A2 tank has an electronic firing pin. The primer of the round is fired electronically rather than via percussion. I suppose in that sense it’s an “electric gun.”
To: CodeToad
Pass enough electricity through a primer, it will go off. No mechanical firing pin needed. Have a link around here somewhere if you need one. Problems: (1) extra complexity, (2) you need quite a bit current at sufficient voltage, and (3) that means you have to lug around backup batteries equals more weight (in the military context ruck sacks are heavy enough without adding a car battery or the equivalent).

Correct, they are not electrically fired; they are mechanically fired through a firing pin to a primer. The smaller miniguns such as the XM214 that fire the 5.56mm NATO cartridge or the M134 that fire the 7.62 NATO cartridge use mechanical firing pins because that's what the ammunition needs.
The larger miniguns such as the 20mm M61 and 30mm GAU-8 on aircraft use electrically-fired primers, as does the M242 Bushmaster 25mm chain gun.

"However, unlike present-day artillery shells, railgun projectiles are just that – projectiles.
They contain no explosives, relying on the kinetic energy imparted by the projectile,"
This "rail gun projectile" contains explosives!

Should have copied you. Here’s what I said to another commenter:

Problems: (1) extra complexity, (2) you need quite a bit [of] current at sufficient voltage, and (3) that means you have to lug around backup batteries equals more weight (in the military context ruck sacks are heavy enough without adding a car battery or the equivalent).
