Is an AR-15 Sig Series 400 with 30-round clips of 5.56 NATO, better than a 12-gauge for home defense in the U.S. against the kinds of attacks we saw in Israel?

Having an argument with the wife, she doesn't want to spend the extra money. Anywhere from $1,000 on up.

Home defense I’ll go with the AR-12, 10 round mag with #4 buckshot and obviously several more loaded magazines.

With 2 10 round magazines you can clear a 1/2 acre as needed.

Not possible to be armed against ALL possibilities, and I live in an urban apartment. So 12 ga it is and the presumed peril is home invasion burglary not terrorist attack.

That said, the rifle is a better firearm for small bands of partisans.

Why is it so hard?

CAREFUL! If you load a shotgun magazine and keep it loaded, unless you have full-brass hulls, the plastic compresses and makes the shotgun unreliable.

Ask me how I know.

I’ve only shot two different mag fed shotguns and both were prone to jams.

yes. But that is the least likely scenario. Everyone should have at least have an AR, a shotgun and a pistol. If you really know how to shoot a bolt or lever action can be very deadly out in the open.

I would probably set that that up with alternating slug/shot rounds.

Even with a Sig Romeo 5 you’re ~$500. Money left over for mags and ammo.

Because historical figures like Clyde Barrow called magazines “clips”.

That’s a two thousand dollar rifle in the .300 version. Are you saying it would be easier for my wife to use? Then we would need two of them.

PSA sells garbage barrels with the low prices stuff. They do carry $$ hammer forged barrels. Will not touch thier lower tier stuff again. Had 2 of thier low priced 16” SS barrels both had the chamber reaming done off axis enough to turn them into shotguns when trying to group;.

I bought a Radical Arms SOCOM AR for $400 on sale at Buds Guns. It’s mil-spec. Highly recommend.

.458 SOCOM ammo is around 2.50 a round. Pricey to shoot

The Tavor is expensive but it is a bit more versatile and may be easier for women to handle.

That was one of the IDF requirements since women make up a large portion of the IDF.

Street price is around $1750.

For just simple home defense a Palmeto State Armory or Aero Precision 16 in barrel mid length AR -15 carbine is really perfectly adequate at a much lower price point.

Make sure you get the mid length gas system in a 16 in barrel if you go the AR route as it makes the rifle shoot softer and is more reliable.

The AR 15 is the standard rifle for most of America these days so you can't go wrong with either the Palmetto or Aero version.

Primary Arms makes a series of low cost optical sights that are perfect for you use and the previously mentioned Sig Romeo is a good option as well. Both the X95 and AR are great options and it really comes down to personal preference. I'd be more inclined to buy the cheaper option to leave funds for a nice optical sight if cost were an issue. I've shot both the Sig M400 and the PSA Mid Length Carbine and I actually prefer the PSA

PSA rifles are a good quality AR and the lower price leaves money for a decent quality optical sight which is a huge advantage as they are much easier to learn to shoot with. If there is any issue with the rifle, Palmetto stands behind their products.

Saving the money to buy ammo and practice as proficiency is more important that anything when it comes to shooting.

This is about home defense, not taking out a body-armored soldier on some battlefield. It’s more likely you’d be up against more than one urban-intruder IN YOUR HOME or AT YOUR FRONT DOOR.
