Experiencing discrimination may change how the brain and the gut communicate with each other, a new study has found. The disruption, the researchers say, could promote behaviors that increase people’s risk of obesity.
The study, published Monday in the journal Nature Mental Health, included more than 100 participants, mostly women, who filled out questionnaires to gauge their experiences of discrimination in their day-to-day lives. The participants then underwent brain scans as they were being shown pictures of sugary and fatty foods, such as cake and ice cream, along with pictures of lower-sugar and low-fat foods like fruit and salad. They also provided fecal samples so the researchers could study their gut microbiome.
In individuals who reported experiencing high levels of discrimination, the photos of unhealthy, high-calorie foods triggered a larger response in the reward processing region of the brain, called the frontal-striatal region. This part of the brain is also involved with motivation and executive control.
That heightened response can lead people to reach for sugar and high-fat foods, the researchers said.
Sugar is highly addictive and is often craved by people undergoing stress, including from discrimination, as a means to provide comfort, said Arpana Gupta, an associate professor-in-residence of medicine at the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine and senior author of the study.

NBC=Nothing But Crap
Yeah, right.
So all the fat whites were discriminated against?
So it’s discrimination?
All this time I thought it was fudge rounds and chips…
Oh, obesity is due to racism. Okay, got it.
What a pantload.
Dang, I have been blaming Global Warming for my big belly.
I’m lean, so being racist and having negro fatigue is slimming…
And, in other NBC news, the earth is flat, lead can be transformed into gold, Biden is intelligent, and math is racist.
Let's break it down. If a person is weak-brained enough to see discrimination everywhere ("reported" discrimination) all the time cuz that explains everything (channeling my inner Colin Flaherty), that same person is liable to be unwise in other areas, including taking care of herself. All the more so if that person is liable to blame other people for her own bad choices (reporting discrimination) and telling herself over and over that there's nothing she can do to change her outcomes.
No! I discriminate rapidly and rampantly! Does this mean I’m going to look like Rosie and Liz had a baby!? I’m already struggling with all my white privilege, I can’t handle additional problems!
It’s called “sample bias”.
Black men like ‘em big. Everybody knows that. Just ask Sir Mix-a-lot.
People who have made a decision to "not be bothered by discrimination" probably find that their brains and guts get along just fine.
On the other hand, wimps and sissies who get bothered by discrimination—real or imaginary—feed their sadness with Oreos and other sweets and turn into porkers overnight.
Madness.
So, if you’re discriminated against for being obese it’ll make you eat sugary foods and get more obese.
Quite a negative feedback loop.
Maybe we should normalize being obese. That should help them loose weight
Oh absolute BS!
So now the 85% of obese black women will claim racism/whitey/other people made them fat. This isn’t science.
We’re not the ones shoveling in the food and drink.
ANY stress will trigger an emotional eater. They don’t call it comfort food for nothing. Did they test for any other kind of stress? To use only stress from discrimination as a cause, tells me that this was a wholly political experiment, and therefore, severely flawed and basically useless.
Walmart is racist!... Walmart is racist!... Walmart is racist!
