The most recent edition of the US Army War College’s academic journal includes a highly disturbing essay on what lessons the US military should take away from the continuing war in Ukraine. By far the most concerning and most relevant section for the average American citizen is a subsection entitled “Casualties, Replacements, and Reconstitutions” which, to cut right to the chase, directly states, “Large-scale combat operations troop requirements may well require a reconceptualization of the 1970s and 1980s volunteer force and a move toward partial conscription.”
An Industrial War of Attrition Would Require Vast Numbers of Troops
The context for this supposed need to reinstate conscription is the estimate that were the US to enter into a large-scale conflict, every day it would likely suffer thirty-six hundred casualties and require eight hundred replacements, again per day. The report notes that over the course of twenty years in Iraq and Afghanistan, the US suffered fifty thousand casualties, a number which would likely be reached in merely two weeks of large-scale intensive combat.
The military is already facing an enormous recruiting shortfall. Last year the army alone fell short of its goal by fifteen thousand soldiers and is on track to be short an additional twenty thousand this year. On top of that, the report notes that the Individual Ready Reserve, which is composed of former service personnel who do not actively train and drill but may be called back into active service in the event they are needed, has dropped from seven hundred thousand in 1973 to seventy-six thousand now…

You are missing the point, we are using this proxy war like so many others to test new weapons and counter measures. We did it in Israel and Afghanistan in the 80s. We never build a weapon without working on a counter measure, because ultimately any effective weapon system will come into common use. Even Israel's Iron Dome cannot stop every missile. Electronics are extremely sensitive to counter measures. Again….you cannot take and hold land without men on the ground. A drone flown from Vegas will not take and hold territory in the Ukraine. If they could Afghanistan would have ended differently.
Well said. Who would want to sign up and subject themselves to relentless indoctrination and discrimination? The kind of people the military needs won’t serve in that kind of hostile and belittling environment.
We really could use a foreign legion for greencards and H1B visa holders. Send them to the combat zones first.
Apparently, it's a state secret in Ukraine. I'm sure the Pentagon knows but they are mum about it for obvious reasons. There are a lot of dead Russians, but in a war of attrition, Russia wins, as long as Putin does not mobilize the population in St. Petersburg and Moscow.
“I’m sure the Pentagon knows but they are mum about it for obvious reasons.”

The government and their allies in the media only tell us what they want us to know.
I’ve got my greetings letter! Came day after I enlisted!! Johnson was president. Told the board to stick it up where the sun don’t shine.

Got mine end of July 1971.
Enlisted mid-July 1971. My choice, not theirs.
Nixon.
I'll tell you what I think. The Republicans are not happy about Ukraine. They must have received some bad news.
My proposal for a cease fire. Putin gets his land bridge. We send 100,000 NATO peacekeepers to Ukraine.
Good..will get the kids out of their parents basement.
But most won’t qualify anyway..a deluge of 4F’s.
The US military is completely and totally unable to re-institute a draft or end a draft or do anything about a draft. They can not even decide what size the military should be.
That is the job of Congress. If you do not know that, you do not know enough to opine.
GloboHomo will kill the American kids that weren’t aborted.
Maybe the draft will filter out the trannies, homos, pedos and other vermin trying to enlist.
“The Republicans are not happy about Ukraine.”

They will be happy as long as they keep getting financial backing from parties who have a stake in continuing the war spending.
Republicans have no convictions or principles. They twist like a wind vane.
I agree with your observation. I can discern no critical, national security interest the United States has in Ukraine.
Slavery
You just keep lessening standards to reach the yearly number. IQ of 70 for the Army is probably 2 years away.
Forced murdering of white people in unnecessary banker’s wars.
Before long these idiots will be engaging in wars in low earth orbit
Russia is not the only enemy , our own US government is the most vile enemy of average people worldwide and threat to peace and prosperity on planet Earth
Anyone who doesnt understand that implementing a draft in America is a complete impossibility has no sense of reality.
Even in the 1970s the draft had become untenable. It fostered a huge protest movement against the war (which was very powerful because of the draft). The old leftist establishment of the Dems were overthrown over the issue: OUT with LBJ, and Humphrey. IN with McCarthey, McGovern, RFK, and other antiwar candidates, all down the line, all the way to Tom Hayden and John Kerry.
1968 featured hundreds of riots by blacks, interspersed with hundreds of protests of the continuing Vietnam War. It was was a big factor in all that. Anti-War protests got huge. The March on the Pentagon in Oct.of 1967 had at least 100,000 people.
Anti-war protests got violent. Kent State happened. How has that been portrayed in our cultural history? Who were the heroes? Who were the fascists?
Draft dodging was common, with huge swaths of society encouraging refusng to serve. Draft dodgers has large networks supporting them, many based in universities and churches. Their were "underground railroads", appropriating the moral rightness of the ablutionists for the anti-draft movement.
It radicalized the whole society. The Left grabbed it as their cause and never let go. It was the origin of the Left becoming the dominent political and social outlook and force in America.
Far left political groups florished, and they all got their start and continued relevancy by being anti-war (which was really anti-draft).
The most famous draft dodger of the era, Mohammed Ali was treated as America's greatest, most moral athlete for the remainder of his life. He was given the honor of lighting the Olympic torch at the Atlantic Olympics. In the history books your kids and grandkids read the anti-war protesters and draft-dodgers were the heroes. The grunts who choosed to comply and serve were victims, chumps, fools, or evil- depending on the narrative requirements.
Or dead, The dead: whom we commemorate with a black scar of granite in Washington. The message isn't "here lie our heroes", rather it is: "don't let this happen to you".¹
In summary: during the Vietnam era the draft became more and more unpopular, until eventually it was abolished. The amount of social and culural damage it was doing was unsustainable.
Any attempt to re-establish the draft would not start with a 1961 level of opposition, it would jump start itself and be very close to where it was in 1971. Very quickly. The internet makes it easy to do that. There are enough old boomers around to assure that the 60's level resistance to a draft would be quickly matched, and then exceeded.
That's before we even get to the character of the Zoomer generation.
THERE WILL BE NO DRAFT.
You can write all the paragraphs you want.
In a major world War there will be a draft.
That’s called reality.
They can’t find enough fags
Bahhhhhhhhaaaaa
