The most recent edition of the US Army War College’s academic journal includes a highly disturbing essay on what lessons the US military should take away from the continuing war in Ukraine. By far the most concerning and most relevant section for the average American citizen is a subsection entitled “Casualties, Replacements, and Reconstitutions” which, to cut right to the chase, directly states, “Large-scale combat operations troop requirements may well require a reconceptualization of the 1970s and 1980s volunteer force and a move toward partial conscription.”
An Industrial War of Attrition Would Require Vast Numbers of Troops
The context for this supposed need to reinstate conscription is the estimate that were the US to enter into a large-scale conflict, every day it would likely suffer thirty-six hundred casualties and require eight hundred replacements, again per day. The report notes that over the course of twenty years in Iraq and Afghanistan, the US suffered fifty thousand casualties, a number which would likely be reached in merely two weeks of large-scale intensive combat.
The military is already facing an enormous recruiting shortfall. Last year the army alone fell short of its goal by fifteen thousand soldiers and is on track to be short an additional twenty thousand this year. On top of that, the report notes that the Individual Ready Reserve, which is composed of former service personnel who do not actively train and drill but may be called back into active service in the event they are needed, has dropped from seven hundred thousand in 1973 to seventy-six thousand now…

A forced draft, and involvement in a war that isn’t ours, sure would be a good way to reduce the population of of a younger generation who parents that were actively involved in war and love the country.

In a true, intellectually literal sense you are correct. However we know that the feds/uniparty are corrupt to the core and care nothing about the future of this country. What the redistributionists collectively will do is sweeten the pot, say a $25,000 signing bonus, another $25,000 for a down payment for a house after 4 years, make illegals legal, pay almost unlimited amount for any school post service, free private medical for life (not the Vet’s programs either) the list goes on. It technically is not close to a draft but rather an irresistible bribe even Hunter/Jao would be proud of.

I see lefties turning against the Biden agenda of unending billions funding the Ukraine “no matter what” - including during a possible government lockdown.
This is not popular with a population that is suffering from the effects of high food prices, rampant crime and $6.50/gallon gas (in So Cal).
Still, there are millions of “low information” voters - I’d say “low IQ” voters who will vote for more of this - including all the illegals who want to keep the borders open and the gravy train of American tax dollars flowing to them.
There would have to be a land invasion of the lower 48 states for the draft to return.

The next war will be conducted almost entirely by drones and robatic weapons.

You have to change more than pay and benefits if you want to attract good people. We have a woke military that wants fewer whites in the military, which has become politicized. General Brown, the former head of the AF and now the Chairman of the JCS, wants fewer white pilots.
USMA now has a degree in Diversity. According to DOD, the biggest security threat to America is climate change. SecDef Austin wants to cleanse white supremacists from the military. Patriotism is seen as a negative. Standards are being lowered in the name of diversity.
Another problem with raising pay and benefits is that it would increase the military budget significantly since about 40% of DOD's budget is spent on people.
The idiots are those taking in MSM war crap, hook line and sinker. (Admittedly, I did as well back in Khaddafi days, Afghanistan/Iraq days. Yes, I’m saying *I* was an idiot back then... didn’t know better... didn’t know the unknown back then). Once banksters are seen for what they are, one cannot unsee.
It’s a pattern that repeats war after war - the leadup of MSM crap, a casus belli put out by the msm/uniparty, and then the continuation of it all. Was done for Afghanistan, is being done right this very moment in Ukraine.

The only fault I have with the author’s assessment is his comparison of the IRR in 1973 versus today. There were over two million uniformed personnel in 1973 at the height of the Cold War. There are around one million three hundred personnel in our military today. Of course the IRR (individual ready reserve) has reduce in size. A better comparison would be the size of the IRR in 2005 as compared to today. In 2005 we were selectively recalling people from the IRR. The vast majority volunteered to return to active duty. We also recalled retirees from the Fleet Reserve (retirees do not have an IRR obligation). The war has been over long enough that the majority of combat veterans have long since completed their IRR obligation and are no longer subject to recall. Hence the reduced numbers in the IRR.
Another option is to stop getting involved in endless foreign wars that we have no National Interest in.
