Residents alarmed as shoplifting incidents trigger store departures: ‘As a community we can’t allow this to continue’ (NY)

Lou Martins is angry, frustrated, and disappointed but not surprised that the first Target store to open in Manhattan — in his New York City neighborhood — is closing in October.

Target this week cited large-scale theft and safety concerns for employees and customers for its decision to close nine stores in New York, San Francisco, Seattle & Portand.

“I’ve seen shoplifting happening in that mall, in Target. I’ve seen cops chasing people carrying bags of products out of the mall,” said Martins, who lives and works a block-and-a-half away from the the East River Plaza shopping center in New York City’s East Harlem neighborhood. That’s the area where the 174,000 square-foot big box Target has anchored the mall since it opened in 2010. The facility also has a Costco, Aldi and Burlington stores.

“Having Target here helped revitalize East Harlem with hundreds of new jobs, customers and more services to our area. Now we’re going to have an empty box here,” he said. “Older residents depended on the Target for their essentials. They’re going to have to go further away to shop. It’s not easy for them.” A domino effect?

He’s especially concerned that Target’s departure will create a troubling domino effect. “We’ve had drugstores closing here, too, because of shoplifting. What if other stores leave? I can feel it. People here are worried about crime getting worse, from shoplifting to more violent crime. As a community, we cannot allow this to continue.”

The retail industry said it is grappling with a particular type of store theft that is more dangerous than petty shoplifting, called “organized retail crime” or ORC. This isn’t a crime of need where an individual grabs an item or two, such as baby formula or food.

The only thing that will stop or slow the mob lootings is armed security guards or clerks shooting a dozen or so of the Cartel sponsored mob when they start smashing and stealing and the armed shooters not being arrested.

Yep, Sheriff Joe came to mind as I was writing that comment. People loved the law and order but hated seeing prisoners in pink panties sweltering in tents.

People are weird that way. But not everybody — I’m sure FReepers are perfectlyi happy to see prisoners in pink clothes sweating up a storm in outdoor tents in Phoenix. I know I am.

We used to shoot looters and lock away thieves for years.

A lot of this would stop if we returned to doing it again.

That harsh Mayor Rudy Giuliani allowed cops to stop, question and frisk suspicious types. (note “question” was part of the slogan).

Now even someone coming from a store with a big trash bag with obviously heavy items in it must be left alone. Also, what if the cop seemed to be questioning the origin of an illegal alien? A world of legal trouble.

Speaking of efficiency, I just got a split order from Amazon Prime. One item cost $1.25 and was delivered by UPS.

I suspect it cost more to ship than what the item cost.

Thanks for posting that. I like facts whenever we can get them.
This doesn’t look like a 7th grader sneaking out with a $30 item. More like career numbers in high figures like stories of “they rushed to the glass covered displays and seemed to know exactly which high end electronics and cameras to take.”

The CNN article says that most of this shoplifting is being done by organized crime, and not by parents trying to feed their children. The progressive district attorneys and judges who refuse to lock up these members of organized crime are knowingly and deliberately allowing grocery stores and pharmacies to be shut down by organized crime.

You and others at FR point toward governments of men rather than laws.

If our safety and freedoms depend on the personality/whims of those elected, the rule of law is gone.

Sadly, that is where our once republic and many states/localities are.

A new Dark Age is nigh.

Portland’s mayor Wheeler is either the dumbest politician or a closet MARXIST ideologue.

The people of Portland elected this Red POS. Now they will die because of him. Stupidity kills and Karma is a bitch on wheels.

_9. Leftists ALways KNOW what they are doing. They have enough manuals and books published about it to fill a library. They succeed because they read and learn from them.

We don’t.
