U.S. guitarist Al Di Meola clutches his chest shortly before struggling to walk off the stage at the Arenele Romane concert venue during his performance in Bucharest, Romania, Wednesday evening, Sept. 27, 2023.

The award-winning U.S. guitarist Al Di Meola suffered a heart attack during a performance in Romania’s capital but is currently in a stable condition and receiving treatment, a hospital spokesperson said on Thursday.

Di Meola, 69, began playing a concert at a venue in Bucharest at 9 p.m. on Wednesday night.

Dragos Cristescu, a photographer who attended the concert, told The Associated Press that he saw Di Meola clasp his chest during the performance and that the guitarist struggled to walk off stage. The other two members of Di Meola's trio continued to play for several minutes until they announced the show would be cut short.

In a statement, the Bagdasar-Arseni emergency hospital said Di Meola was admitted to a cardiology ward where he is being treated for a segment elevation myocardial infarction, or STEMI.

According to the health care website Cleveland Clinic, a STEMI mainly affects the heart’s lower chambers and “tend(s) to be more severe and dangerous compared to other types of heart attack.”

Di Meola’s decades-long career has earned him widespread critical acclaim and awards including a Grammy. One of Di Meola's most popular tracks is “Mediterranean Sundance,” which was part of his 1977 album “Elegant Gypsy.” According to his official website, he has sold more than 6 million records worldwide.

Unsafe and ineffective. Induces myocarditis and other heart conditions.

Great guitarist. There are some excellent interventional cardiologists in Romania. Hopefully he gets rapid treatment.

That stinks. I guess that’ll end the tour. Great guitarist.

He's a great guitarist, and, of course, a TDS'er to a degree that makes it so I don't listen to him any longer.

Prayers up for Al DiMeola. Saw him live back in 1976. He was fantastic.

I have been following him on Facebook lately. He has spent a lot of time touring overseas over the last few years. Al has been posting lots of pictures of him in Italy and elsewhere.

One cool video excerpt involved him playing adhoc in a small Italian restaurant. Maybe someone just handed him a guitar? He seemed to be dining there and then started playing and not sure anyone knew who he was.

As one who has to watch my diet I admit I was envious that he was seemingly able to eat like someone in their 20s and get away with it. I guess not.

What a master guitarist on both electric and acoustic guitars. One has to see him live to really appreciate his talent. Hopefully he will have a full recovery and adapt.

Saw him play in a small club setting some 40 years ago, phenomenal.

He’s 69 now, and was a very young man when he did “Return to Forever.” Seventies jazz musician on the cutting edge.

My wife didn't recognize his name but if he is a Jazz guitarist he's got to be good.   She will keep her ears tuned for his work.

Get well soon Al.

Rick Beato did an excellent interview with him not all that long ago. Worth listening to if you're a music nerd.

What was the date that he got vaccinated?

As long as you are going to pretend to know that the vax was involved at least add a few more make believe details to juice up your story some.
