If you are 5’10” you have 2155 steps in a mile.

3000 steps is 1.4 miles. That’s pretty good exercise for someone my age.

According to Japan’s National Institute on Longevity, walking up to 8,000 steps a day is good for one’s health, but walking more than 8,000 steps a day is bad for one’s health. Or so my friend in Japan tells me. It is a common theme in medicine that enough of something is good but too much is bad.

Most people don't even need any special equipment. My iPhone has a built-in Health App that records every step I take (including flights of stairs climbed). I can see daily results as well as averages for weekly, monthly, 6m, and 1 year.

What I like about this app is that if I go walking in the woods up and down hills, the app counts the uphills as stairs. It is not unusual to come back from a hike with 20+ flights of stairs credited to me.

I'm pretty sure the Android phones have something similar.

My goal is to maintain 10,000/day average.

As I age, I realize how important this is, as many people my age who are sedentary end up having health problems and a lot of joint pain. It really is true when they say "use it or lose it."

It's not as hard as you might think to get 10,000 steps in (about 5 miles). Dedicated one hour a day for walking. That alone should be 6,000 steps. Then spend the rest of the day taking extra steps when you can. Such as parking in the far corner of the supermarket and then walking around the entire perimeter of the supermarkets a few times. You will end up with 10,000 steps easily.

My 96 yo spouse sits all day. No BP med, no cholesterol med, one small dose heart pacer med. Some people benefit from exercise for sure. Some do well with sedentary lifestyle. Thing is, he worries about nothing, never has, just takes each day as it comes.

I would also say I average 10,000 a day, my high has been just over 22,000. But I’m tracking 6000 steps (about 3 miles) which as of yesterday I have been doing at least that for 865 straight days. Really fun trying to get the 6000 steps when it’s below zero in a snow storm (been there done that). I remember 1 day that I just made the 6000 steps when I had to be at the airport at 0500 and was taking a transpacific flight where I lost 13 hours while on the plane.

I had a devil of a time with steps a few weeks ago when my watch said I was at 6666 steps.

While I agree a phone app tracking would be better, the watch is easier to check.

I’m almost 70 and I find if I average 9,000 steps a day my hip starts to get a little sore. Instead I try and do 8,500 - 9,000 a day for 6 days and than I take an easy day on Sunday where I only do 3,500 - 4,000 for a weekly average of 8,000 - 8,200. Better for preserving the hips.

I use both a phone app for my steps but I also use an Oura Smart ring that monitors my heart rate, O2 levels, temperature and sleep cycle. Cutting back slightly from 9,000 to a 8,000 average has been beneficial for me personally.

Just saw a cardiologist last week. I never had a cardiologist before. I’m 87.
Told him that before the stupid governor closed the gyms for “covid,” I was on the treadmill five days a week doing a mile in 14 minutes. Plus lifting weights. Had blood pressure like a teenager’s.

After gyms were close for “covid”, he told me, there was a big uptick in heart cases.

Everyone needs to get out and walk, do your best and get better at it.

Plus, keep your weight down. When cardiologist weighed me, I said, “oh good, I gained 5 pounds. Now up to 116. “ Cardiologist didn’t hear that often, most people need to loose weight.

I live in the Northeast and love the challenge of getting my steps in during even the most inclement winter weather. You just need to dress appropriately. Last winter, I walked around a lake in minus 15 degrees and there were zero people out there besides me. It was a sudden cold spell so I still remember hearing the lake groaning as the ice rapidly formed. I thought at first there were bears nearby.

Only weather I can't walk in is pouring rain so for that, I go to the nearby mall and can get a few miles there by walking around inside it several times. Or if I'm in the city for work, I go into nearby Grand Central where there are plenty of subterranean passages to explore.

It was way too damn many before I hit level 40 and finally got my horse, when I used to play in the olden days of WoW. Actually, going anywhere was way too many steps before I got the horse.

I understand that the Goldshire Inn has become a hotbed of depravity these days. Haven’t played in a dozen years, so I’m just going by what I read.

I'm beginning to understand that that could be the real answer.
