Most people don't even need any special equipment. My iPhone has a built-in Health App that records every step I take (including flights of stairs climbed). I can see daily results as well as averages for weekly, monthly, 6m, and 1 year.

What I like about this app is that if I go walking in the woods up and down hills, the app counts the uphills as stairs. It is not unusual to come back from a hike with 20+ flights of stairs credited to me.

I'm pretty sure the Android phones have something similar.

My goal is to maintain 10,000/day average.

As I age, I realize how important this is, as many people my age who are sedentary end up having health problems and a lot of joint pain. It really is true when they say "use it or lose it."

It's not as hard as you might think to get 10,000 steps in (about 5 miles). Dedicated one hour a day for walking. That alone should be 6,000 steps. Then spend the rest of the day taking extra steps when you can. Such as parking in the far corner of the supermarket and then walking around the entire perimeter of the supermarkets a few times. You will end up with 10,000 steps easily.

I would also say I average 10,000 a day, my high has been just over 22,000. But I’m tracking 6000 steps (about 3 miles) which as of yesterday I have been doing at least that for 865 straight days. Really fun trying to get the 6000 steps when it’s below zero in a snow storm (been there done that). I remember 1 day that I just made the 6000 steps when I had to be at the airport at 0500 and was taking a transpacific flight where I lost 13 hours while on the plane.

I had a devil of a time with steps a few weeks ago when my watch said I was at 6666 steps.

While I agree a phone app tracking would be better, the watch is easier to check.
