As it moves to an online strategy amid rampant increase in shoplifting CVS is making drastic reforms to adjust to the needs of modern online shoppers Rival Walgreens also plans to shut 150 stores as part of a modernization drive
CVS is set to close hundreds of stores across the country as they undergo a complete retail overhaul – as more stores move towards online sellers amid rampant increases in crime.
The major drugstore chain has announced that they will be culling 300 stores by the end of 2024, and 600 more by 2027, around ten percent of all shops.
In the announcement, they said that they were undergoing a new 'retail footprint strategy', as retailers across the US struggle to adjust to post-pandemic footfall.
More shoppers are turning to buying online in the wake of the pandemic, as well as rocketing levels of shoplifting affecting sales in stores.
CVS claims that 'local market dynamics, population shifts, and a community's store density' are some of the aspects they have looked into when deciding which stores to shutter.
'We remain focused on the competitive advantage provided by our presence in thousands of communities across the country, which complements our rapidly expanding digital presence.'
The company confirmed that they are pushing to turn more of its stores into healthcare destinations in an attempt to drum up more claims for its insurance business.
It is also working to expand the HealthHub business, despite investigators finding in June that the company failed to provide proper interpretation services for individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing during their appointments with medical staff.
The Department of Justice and CVS came to a settlement agreement that requires the company to change its policies.

If it’s mainly the locations in high-crime areas, good for them.
The chicongo mayor wants government run grocery stores why not government run pharmacies? Free drugs!
I went into a CVS not too long ago. I couldn’t believe how expensive their prices were.
Wow…talk about coincidence.
We have a discount, thrift store about 20 miles from me Called Borden Bargains.
They sell a mixture of things on pallets from Amazon etc But it’s not a normal bargain place …it’s BIG and nice, clean and well ordered for example they were selling Blueberry protein bars at 10c each, and they were very good and fresh.
Wife just called me and said they are closing in about 4 days.
My GOD! If nice discount stores are starting to close people are really hurting. I think the true state if the economy is being covered up.
‘Drugstores’ as a whole are nearing obsolescence.
Why go to a high priced ‘drugstore’ when every Walmart, Target, Sam’s, and Grocery Chain has a pharmacy?..................
Doesn’t suprise me ... for something like 18 months my wife was getting coupons for $5. As long as you didn’t go over the $5 you could walk out without having to pay anything.
This wasn’t monthly but weekly. Every week she’d go in - find something(s) up to the $5 limit and walk out at most paying 25 cents and usually 0. Sometimes the idiots do it to themselves.
Parts of America really ARE going to be nothing more than Ghost Towns in the future.
It was fun while it lasted. Thanks again, Socialist Democrats and FECKLESS GOPe pukes! :(
Should have picked their own damn cotton.
Looks like many shoplifting communities will become drugstore deserts. There were always too many huge drugstores. Walgreens closed down 2 nearby me. One is left.
What always amused me is that 90% pf the customers are women. They love that drugstore vibe. The ol ladies are addicted to coupon clipping at CVS and Walgreens. And where you can buy pizza and ice cream etc.
One of our “diversity strengths takes down another American business with their rampant thievery. Congrats! (<- “Highly offensive racial slur”) America!.
Well, that's true where I live, too (Cape Cod, MA). But, I think of them as resort/emergency prices for tourists who need something immediately, or don't know where the nearest supermarket is. The medical and OTC prices are OK, even compared to the supermarkets with OTC aisles.
I hate that stores are starting to disappear. Buying on line can be disappointing.
Drugstores getting into primary care and healthcare technology is very promising. I just don’t understand why they can’t do more to prevent shoplifting, or even what is propelling this sudden “rampant increase.” ??
I am not seeing a problem. Unless places like Chicago and California mandate that companies put stores in areas where the local governments choose.
Remember when the only convenience stores were the 7-Elevens, and maybe one other national brand? They were really prevalent. Then someone copied the model and we had all these generic convenience stores.
Also, the original convenience stores did not have gas pumps 50 years ago. Now, that issue concerns me A LOT. We need to have access to gasoline.
Let the market decide (a la Adam Smith, and classical economics).
(for example they were selling Blueberry protein bars at 10c each, and they were very good and fresh.)
Wow shame to lose them
Did they say why they are closing?
Buying on line can be a tremendous pita, especially returns.
I will never get a rug online again.
How do you like them apples, you idiot “Defund the Police” activists?
Now they will bitch about “pharmacy deserts” and it’s a short jump to progressive cities saying “Capitalism failed. We need to protect our democracy. We must have city-owned and operated pharmacies.”
Everything worked well in America until a smarmy know-nothing bastard came on the scene out of nowhere and said “We must transform America.”
I imagine they figure they won’t make any money with Bidenskyyyy importing 7 million idiots known as “five finger discounters”. Lowe’s and Home Depot has to lock up everything on their shelves. That gets expensive.
