For the past 100 years, a box of never-before-seen negatives has been preserved in a block of ice in Antarctica. Recently, Conservators of the New Zealand Antarctic Heritage Trust came across the 22 exposed, but unprocessed, cellulose nitrate negatives during an attempt to restore an old exploration hut.

I didn't realize this was 10 years old until I started to post it, but no matter how old it is, it's still interesting.

The negatives are about 100 years old. That would make Nancy Pelosi about 30 when they were exposed. I wonder if Nancy is on any of the pictures.

There they go with the N word again.
They are not 100 year old Negatives! They are Golden-Age Misanthropes!

The negatives are believed to be from Ernest Shackleton's 1914-1917 Ross Sea Party, a group that was stranded in the hut during a blizzard when their ship blew out to sea. They were eventually rescued, but the box remained buried until now.

They just got back from the Photomat. They should have gone with the “developed in one month” option.

Here is the deep link to the page that the New Zealand Heritage Trust keeps on the hut, used by both Scott and Shackleton during Antarctic expeditions. This article came from this page, so should be copyright safe.

San Fran Nan was quite the hottie when she was 30. But...who cares? She’s a mental case.

The Ross Sea party was a component of Sir Ernest Shackleton's 1914–1917 Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition. Its task was to lay a series of supply depots across the Great Ice Barrier from the Ross Sea to the Beardmore Glacier, along the polar route established by earlier Antarctic expeditions. The expedition's main party, under Shackleton, was to land near Vahsel Bay on the Weddell Sea on the opposite coast of Antarctica, and to march across the continent via the South Pole to the Ross Sea.As the main party would be unable to carry sufficient fuel and supplies for the whole distance, their survival depended on the Ross Sea party setting up supply depots, which would cover the final quarter of their journey.

This success proved ultimately without purpose, because Shackleton's main expedition was unable to land after Endurance was crushed in the Weddell Sea ice. Shackleton eventually led his men to safety, but the transcontinental march did not take place and the Ross Sea party's depots were not required.

The guy in the pic is a dead ringer,
and I mean dead ringer for me when I was in my late 40s up until a few years ago. The face, hair, 'stache and intimidating scowl match almost exactly. Crazy!
I just showed this to my wife and she said, "Damn! That is you!"
Weird - I don't remember being there. . . but I do hate the cold. . .

Just saw ‘Kiefer Sutherland’s Dad’ in ‘Eye of the Needle’ a while back. I had read the book decades ago (Ken Follett) but forgot how it ended, so it was great fun. :)
