How in the world does this happen?! How do you let a rifle get so completely damaged like this? Did it get run over by a car or a tank? whatever happened, we're gonna have to fix it ourselves. Nobody say a thing, or we're all gonna get in trouble. Basic training will have nothing on the smoke session we get if Sergeant Major finds out.

I didn’t get to watch the whole thing, but...I liked where it was going...

When one uses firearms everyday things happen.

I seen plenty of rifles and shotguns get destroyed in vehicle crashes.

A few thousand pounds of steel coming together at speed tend to cause thing to bend

My thought would be to stick a bayonet on and say you were training too hard, or do they not do bayonet courses anymore?

Some of the commenters at the YouTube site insisted they had swapped out uppers for similar incidents while they were in the service, in order to avoid getting in trouble for the damage to their weapon.

I found those claims odd because the M16s have been serialized since the very beginning.

We inventoried M16s 10,000 at a time. It was a full production, requiring teams to arm up, open up the cases, sometimes clean them, and then place them individually on the table where two MSgts would confirm each serial number (viewed either directly or through the window in the vacuum sealed foil bags), and they'd sign the weapons card. No one was going to put their signature on a card for a suspicious weapon. The M16s were then often vacuum sealed in bags, if they weren't already, and then eventually shipped out.

“It came like that from the factory.” Well, it’s worth a try.

The only part of the M16 that is serialized is the lower receiver. The barrel assembly (which was damaged in this video) can be interchanged with an undamaged barrel assembly. The lower receiver is the only part that matters when taking accountability of a particular rifle.

I just caught that reading more comments. They weren’t swapping lowers.

“adult language”

That’s a terrible euphemism.

Lolz!! I once saw a soldier forget his rifle between 2 wheels of a Hemmit. He proceeds to drive off and bent his barrel. This was an A2 rifle with iron sights. He got a new barrel replaced on the upper from the armorers and did not get in trouble from higher up. This was during desert storm so maybe a bit of leeway.
