This is your ping to the All Things Prepping, Simple Living, Back to the Basics [a place to come sit on the porch and chat, an on going thread]

This week's topic is

Welcome Back!! and

What do you think is the most crucial survival topic to start with?

I thought I would try to revive the old thread and hopefully do a better job of keeping it going. If anybody wants to help posting topics, you will have my undying gratitude and lots of praises.

I'm using the old ping list so if anybody wants off it just let me know.

“:I’m using the old ping list so if anybody wants off it just let me know.”

If you would put me on the ping list that is ok.

For a few days now I have been looking at the “Bug out Bag” stuff online. Some are ok some are stupid what to put in that bag are interesting it is a personal choice.

Rule #1 for Preppers:

Decide who you trust with your life.

Never let anyone else know about your preps.

You will want to look poor to any outsider.

That means no noisy generators, no fancy vehicles, etc.

This great scene from Goodfellas explains the issue:

A few weeks before the last hurricane threat we decided we are getting too old to bail out at these threats so decided to research a basic light duty emergency generator
to see us through possible storm related power outages.

Just something powerful enough to provide some lights and power the refrigerator enough each day to prevent immediate food spoilage.

We found a Champion Power Equipment 4375/3500-Watt Portable Generator on Amazon priced at $326.47
It had good user ratings so we decided to think about the purchase for a while.

Two weeks later as Hurricane Idalia approached we decided to make the purchase.
But when we went to Amazon they had jumped the price to $412.00

Searching the net we found the next better model of the Champion 4375/3500-Watt Generator at Bass Pro for $339.97 with no state tax and free shipping.

It arrived the 5th day after the order was placed.

“We are in for some bumpy rides, and prepping can only help.”

Ain’t that the truth! And it doesn’t even need to BE THIS WAY! Grrrr!

“What do you think is the most crucial SURVIVAL topic to start with?”

I probably sound like a broken record, but get yourself DEBT FREE. That, in and of itself, frees you up to so many possibilities and opportunities! Use whatever method works for you. Snowball-Method Debt Payment, Dave Ramsey’s ‘Baby Steps’ or just cut up your credit cards for starters!

How the Debt Snowball Method Works:

https://www.ramseysolutions.com/debt/how-the-debt-snowball-method-works

The Seven Baby Steps:

https://www.ramseysolutions.com/dave-ramsey-7-baby-steps

I was debt free when I retired (I sold my farm, my only debt) at age 56. Having a positive cash flow is so important if you want to buy a generator for your home, pay cash for that big freezer and the side of beef you want to buy below grocery store prices. You don’t have to worry about a big car repair or any other life emergency that crops up (and they DO!) because you’re financially prepared.

I have been ‘prepping’ since I was a kid; I grew up in Tornado & Blizzard Country, so I learned from the best - My Dad. He was always prepared for anything; I felt VERY safe growing up and I still want that level of safety and readiness in my life, today. (Miss You, Dad!)

Yeah, skills learned in the Army helped a lot, too - but you can read an Army Manual for any of THAT kind of stuff. ;)

One more thought: I’m NEVER going to be the kind of hard-charging prepper that wants to be the Last Woman Standing. If things are THAT dire (world war, a nuclear strike, aliens invade us hoping to find intelligent life) *SMIRK* I’d rather head for Heaven than eat bugs and live in a cave or the shell of our former home.

Please take me off the ping list. These days I’m likely to see everything posted on FR on any given day anyway, so no need to ping.

I used to check out granny’s threads back when they were going. It seemed like they eventually became a valiant but doomed attempt to repost every recipe from the internet, but there were quite a few interesting things in them too.

So, CB, this looks like an interesting little thread you’ve got going here. What topics are generally popular? Is everyone ok with sharing a bit of their lives? Nothing too personal lol, just stories of interest? I see that recipes used to abound lol. I’ll shy away from those, except my potato salad is to die for.....just sayin’.

Any politics allowed? Or do we not want any Trump/DeSantis/Pence/Haley/Ramaswamy?/Christie wars to ensue lol? Did y’all welcome news postings/discussions?

Inquiring minds want to know lol!

Had a great visit with the little one. She’s on the cusp of taking her first steps.

Which topic is the most crucial depends on how you’re defining it.

Most of the time, sanitation and clean water are going to be huge problems. I tend to lump them together because they’re closely related.

But, if someone is just starting to dip their toe into the prepper world, what I tell them to start with is a 3-day power outage. Why? Because it gets them thinking about things without overwhelming them. Once they’ve prepared for a 3-day outage, and have done a test run by turning off the power for a weekend, their brain will keep working, expanding on things, and before they know it they’ve changed their whole outlook.
