All Things Prepping, Simple Living, Back to the Basics [Survival Today, an on going thread]
CottonBall

Posted on 09/16/2023 3:07:53 PM PDT by CottonBall

This is an ongoing thread – meaning come back to chat, post information, or ask questions any time. Hopefully the thread won’t stagnate and I’ll do better at posting weekly (or bi-weekly) topics than I have in the past. (anyone willing to post a topic now and then we'll be highly praised and appreciated).

We are in for some bumpy rides, and prepping can only help. If for peace of mind, if nothing else. We have a wonderful gardening thread and a current-events survival/prepping thread, and hopefully this one can piggyback off of those, maybe having a longer discussion about certain topics or … whatever. It's your thread, do what you like with it! (civilly, of course)

Here are granny’s threads, if anyone wants to peruse them:

nw_arizona_granny’s Thread #2

I’m trying to buy at places other than Amazon when I can. They’ve got everyone “needing” 2 day shipping and have been raising prices. I really hate when I put something in the cart and the price goes up! it’s happened too often to be coincidence, and the price NEVER goes down. It makes me not buy it so I’m not sure what the benefit to them is.

Good job bargain hunting!!

These days I am reluctant to throw away anything. You never know when nothing will be available and we have to make do. What worries me most is things aren’t made near as well as they were during the depression, when people could make things last.

Can I use your post as topic number one?

I thought I might ping the list on Tuesdays or wednesdays. I see you do the garden thread on Saturday so that would be spread out enough. Unless you have another idea?

My husband is going to love that! He loves potatoes and I never even considered water canning them, over boiled potatoes just aren’t appetizing.

I don’t worry too much about USDA approval, my favorite thing to use are Tattler Lids that are not approved. Those are great for prepping because you can reuse them over and over, and you can reuse the seals several times. I bought a bunch of each when we first moved here about 10 years ago, and I haven’t had to replace any rings yet.

I’m in East tennessee, right in the appalachians. I can pretty much see the Appalachian Trail from my front porch. Well it is across the valley and up a mountain but it’s over there. So I probably seen those beans.

Okay back to watching videos! I haven’t finished the potato one yet, I was just so excited I had to comment

Thanks for rebooting them!

I agree with your comments regarding Amazon.

I don’t care for Jeff Bezos’s politics and do prefer to buy elsewhere.

But far too often Amazon does seem to have the best deal overall on price, delivery and convenience.

A big factor in all purchases these days is the cost of gasoline when considering local vendors.

But, as evidenced in our experience about the emergency generator, other sources do seem to be catching up.

For the people who have the energy to do it, and who keep freezers full of great meats and such, they should be prepared to can everything worth saving.

Canning your freezer wealth would be a heck of a chore and would involve being completely prepared for the effort, but it would be the ideal if things really went bad.

I watched the TV series ‘Jericho’ and it bugged me terribly how they treated the supermarket refrigerated food even though they knew this might be the big one.

The Mayor should have called those small-town ladies and set to canning everything they could from the store, not only would it all be saved but then those precious protein calories could have been distributed with great efficiency and over a longer period of time when they were most needed for survival, instead of wasted or gorged on over a couple of days.

I have gotten by with mine for years, but you have to keep enough gas on hand for a few days of intermittent running.
I re-supply my 2 - 30 gallon drums each year with ethanol free gas and Stabil fuel storage to be able to run the fridges and charge the batteries.

Thanks for sharing your experience.
That’s the kind of intermittent use I have in mind.
I also plan on using only no-ethanol gas and have some Stabil on hand.
