There was a scary moment on Friday night at Bristol Motor Speedway as Dale Earnhardt Jr. was forced to end the race early.

Jr.'s car caught fire during the Food City 300 on Friday with 29 laps to go, and he had to be helped out of his vehicle.

The fire also caught his uniform, giving himself quite the burn.

"I saw some smoke in the car, and I smelt it. I was like ‘Hopefully, that’s not me.' That last lap, I saw a big fireball down in the tunnel in the car, and I felt it, obviously. My uniform was burning up. I was like ‘I can’t keep going, I gotta stop.'"

I went to the NASCAR race in Riverside, CA in what I think was 1984. I was stationed at Camp Pendleton back then with the Marine Corps. I remember it as a fairly good time. We brought plenty of beer that was kept in coolers and did some tailgating before the race. I remember the race as being very loud. I could not figure out how they figure out who won because they were always pulling over to get gas and tires and whatnot. There were some wrecks that sent car pieces flying into the air but they never seemed to make it into the crowd. At least not the day I was there.

It was fun and we drank a lot of beer that day. Lot of noise.

Real Americans?? Real Americans are the middle class. The people with marriages to sustain & children to raise. They are the people who worked hard & played by the rules; that studied, scrimped & saved, learning trades or earning diplomas to get jobs that will pay a decent salary & bring income & stability for the future; that held on to their religious faith & sense of right & wrong; that had pride in the things they owned & never gave in to envy of things they couldn’t afford. Real America has strong marriages, and children who don’t grow up in broken home. Real America has high standards that they try to live up to. Real America has moral standards, decency & belief in things greater than themselves, like God. Real America doesn’t have a life span that’s getting shorter due vices & habits they’ve stopped trying to control. Just so we understand one another: the standard of the real America that I believe in is never going to be the guy living in an unkempt trailer, with garbage & waste littering his lawn, the 400 pound lard ass that takes zero pride in himself; the guy that leaves his family in the lurch when he dies too young because he dies younger than he should due to his vices; the people who treat marriage as a legal document, dispensable & unnecessary; the people who verbally wrap themselves in the flag, but for get that a national culture is about unified language, common heritage, historical events, religious faith, strong families, constitutionality, productiveness, economic stability, good morals, education, architecture & beautification, art & a common culture. Fact! The only people who say otherwise are people who don’t like those conservative realities or are people who balk at those high standards- most likely because the way that they and the people they love falls far short of those standards 🤔

And probably a soccer fan, too. Soccer, the most useless sport ever devised. Kick a ball around until a clock runs out, celebrate a wonderful nil-nil score, then stampede and kill a hundred fans.

Nascar racing isn’t done any justice on TV. Go to a race, preferably a mile and a half track, get a seat 10 rows up between pit exit and turn 1. The roar, the smell, the speed, all are overwhelming. You never appreciate the danger until you realize the cars are on the extreme edge of losing control as they enter the turn. They don’t just turn, they ride on the brink of control and crash at 170 mph.

Now try that on a hot summer day with no air conditioning for 500 miles, bumper to bumper.

Or just go jog around a flat field tapping a ball back and forth. No contact please.
