A DoorDash customer got a side of saliva with his takeout after the deliveryman was caught spitting on the food as revolting revenge for a 'small tip.'
Elias Crisanto, 13, ordered food for himself and his mom to be delivered to their Miami apartment. The teenager left his DoorDash deliveryman a $3 tip, which he thought was 'good' for the half-mile journey for the driver.
Crisanto watched the delivery happen in real-time through the Ring doorbell camera, and it seems normal at first.
The deliveryman, a man wearing a casual outfit of flip-flops and shorts, approached the door and put the food down before taking a picture to prove the food had been delivered.
But in a disgusting moment caught on Ring camera footage - the DoorDasher is seen crouching down to spit on the food, not once or twice but three times.
The Spanish-speaking deliveryman strutted away whilst complaining about not receiving a good tip for picking up the food and delivering it half a mile.
Elias said to Telemundo 51 he watched the incident happen through the security camera app on his phone.
"If it wasn't because of the camera, no one knows. I wanted to vomit, because who does that?' the teen asked.
Tampering with anyone's food is a felony in the state of Florida, according to Florida's Anti-Tampering Food Act.
If a person is convicted of food tampering it's considered a second-degree felony, which could result in penalties including up to 15 years in jail or $10,000 in fines.
DoorDash responded to the sickening situation in a statement:
'While we empathize with the frustration of not receiving a tip, this behavior is unacceptable and falls far below the high quality experience we aim to provide.

BTW it's a crime to tamper with food.
I’ve never done it, although I downloaded the app being curious about the delivery charge
What’s a reasonable tip? Dont the drivers get a cut of that charge?
One example, one restaurant only charged like $5 and another one was $15 a mile further away
Im new to the concept but can no longer drive, so I’m trying to figure this out.
Cook at home.
My husband is a fast-food junkie but isn’t able to go out to eat. He’s pretty much bedridden. When he wants fast-food, I can eat my healthy meals without making two different meals.
I started ordering him fast-food through DoorDash and they have been the best! All have been super nice people, and most are retiree age.
That behavior might be happening in some places but not here.
I subscribe to the service as an annual subscription and there are no extra delivery fees if you do that. It’s called DashPass. My daughter subscribes monthly. Most places don’t attach fees if you order over $12 worth of food. We have really enjoyed this service since we are so rural and have never had home delivery of anything until this. It’s not just food either. They will deliver groceries and pharmacy items.
“While we empathize with the frustration of not receiving a tip”
He did get a tip and it was more than you paid him, DoorDash! If he didn’t think $3 was enough he shouldn’t have done the delivery.
“the frustration of not receiving a tip”
The guy got a tip. Wonder why DD worded it that way.
The driver spitting in the food is one thing and bad enough, but it's Miami after all. The likely fatherless kid should have just peeled himself away from the video game for 30 minutes and walked the mile round trip to get the damned junk food himself.
Although gross, he probably could get away with it with a good lawyer because he didn’t spit on the food but the plastic bag covering the food. Still disgusting. The story doesn’t even give the entire price of the food to see if 3 dollars was even appropriate.
are these people crippled? You probably could have walked the 1/2 mile to get food and still make it home.
So true.
Tipping should be stopped.
This is absolutely insane that we should have to pay people to do their job.
The deliveryman’s job is to..... ta da.. DELIVER the food on time and intact.
Nothing to deserve a tip in any way.
Similarly for self service or indeed many other items
Self-righteous abolitionists began tipping slaves in protest to the practice of slavery.
Just another gift to Whitey for the sin of slavery.
In Japan they’ll spit in your food if you DO leave a tip*, as it’s considered an insult.
I guess that’s one of the drawbacks of NOT being a ‘multicultural’ society.
*not quite, but leaving a tip does confuse people there
I didn’t quite believe you, so googled it and YOU WERE RIGHT!!
https://www.povertylaw.org/article/the-racist-history-behind-americas-tipping-culture/
Tipping proliferated in the United States after the Civil War, when the restaurant and hospitality industries hired newly emancipated Black women and men but offered them no wage–leaving them to rely on patrons’ gratuities for their pay instead. Simply put, tipping was introduced as a way to exploit the labor of former slaves.
“It’s the legacy of slavery that turned the tip in the United States from a bonus or extra on top of a wage, to a wage itself,”
The guy did receive a tip!
(Though food for mom and teen probably did make it a paltry tip.)
Are you comparing this $3 tip to, say, 15 percent in a restaurant for continuing attention from a waiter? It's hardly the same thing.
The guy drove for a minute and walked up a sidewalk. Say it was a five-minute job -- $3 is then $36/hour.
Not defending this arseholes actions, but there is a bit more to it than that.
Understand your doordash driver doesn’t work for the restaurant, so he’s not sitting there waiting. They had to drive to that restaurant from wherever they were to get that order, there is a good chance the order wasn’t ready when he got there and had to sit around and wait for it (time he could have spent on another order/delivery instead) to be ready then, and only then did he take it the 1/2 mile to be delivered.
So, the time of this driver involved in this is far more than just the 5 minutes to drop it off.
Even a hustling driver, at least in my area is realistically only making about $20 an hour when all is said and done, and that’s if they are hustling and know which restaurants and deliveries to avoid.
Door Dash drivers aren’t making nearly 80k a year... need to wake up a bit.
Ya think?
I abhor this mealy-mouthed statement.
Some years ago, when a local supermarket began delivering groceries to your door, we decided to try it to see what it was like, and it was not bad. It was kind of the “new thing” attraction.
But they began expecting higher and higher tips to the person who delivered it, and it got completely ridiculous. And the quality of produce went down. (initially, they delivered very high quality, I suppose because they knew that was what people would gripe about)
Sure, we were both very busy, but the tipping was stupid.
I have no problem tipping, and often do extravagantly when I receive excellent service that enhances my restaurant experience, but now, if you don’t tip 25%, you will get a dirty look, if not spit in your food.
After living outside the USA I have a problem with tipping - it’s not needed.
It should be only, ONLY for super-exceptional service.
Something over and over the line of duty.
