I want to record a series of interviews many hours worth. And perhaps post the content later. What sort of recording device is used in these digital days?

Never mind your recording device. I would focus on not repeating the same question verbatum three times. Otherwise your interviews will go on forever.

The Sony ICD-UX570 is a little newer, slightly cheaper, and said to perform slightly better. I just ordered one.

Check out Tascam DR40X. I use it for recording my band practices and gigs. Excellent little recorder.

Depends on desired quality. Your mobile phone will work if that level of quality suits your needs.

“Wow. We had a reel to reel 40 years ago”

Wow. I checked 40 minutes ago and I still have that reel-to-reel machine in the next room !

Well, you could record on one of these babies...

then run the output of that through your transcrabulator, and play the output of that step on this little gizmo...

(This will decrease your carbon footprint -- unless your feet are made of carbon.)

Me too! Tascam DR40X is overqualified for the job of recording interviews, and rather expensive. If I didn't need it for professional work I'd just use a phone and a sound card.

Laptop, a decent USB microphone (Rode makes good and affordable ones,) and free Audacity software. Use an external SSD, record in mono, lowest bitrate, MP3 compression, and you'll get thousands of hours on a 1TB SSD.

Once you’ve made the recording, you can get free automated transcription from several online services.

Use a good quality microphone please, in a room with good acoustics and no background noise.
When you post it, no background music.
Consider consulting a professional. I'm not one but my hearing is poor.

As a youth, friend of mine & I used his dad’s wire recorder. It was basically a spooled wire we recorded our goofy sayings on.

In most major cities, you could just stand on any street corner and talk...

Then petition the local government for access to your recording...

Nothing is missed by governments at all levels...

My ordinary phone just makes and receives calls.

You must be talking about those iFag things everyone stares at all day.

I have a smart phone, a cheap Android not one of the expensive iPhones or Apple phones. Right now it’s my only connection to the Internet so it comes in handy. I take pictures of my children and grandchildren with it and print them out for framing.
Call it what you want, it comes in handy.
