Boston family says their 14-year-old son died after attempting the “One Chip Challenge” involving reaper and scorpion peppers

A nightmare scenario for any family here:

A 14-year-old student from Worcester, Massachusetts, died on Friday, officials say, and his family says his death was caused by complications from eating an extremely spicy chip that's the subject of a viral challenge.

Harris Wolobah's mother confirmed to NBC10 Boston that the family believes the teenager died of complications from the One Chip Challenge, though the results of an autopsy were pending.

Here's the young man in question:

The "One Chip Challenge" was launched by the chip manufacturer Paqui. It comes wrapped in its own individual coffin-shaped container replete with warnings about just how spicy it really is.

Needless to say, the thing is spicy.

It's made with both reaper and scorpion peppers, two of the hottest peppers in the entire world. It will light your mouth up. Whether or not young Mr. Wolobah passed away from the chip is uncertain, though his tragic death lined up with his having consumed it. He first developed a stomach ache at school after eating it; then, it got serious:

He felt better after they went home, but at 4:30 p.m., when he was about to leave for basketball tryouts, his brother yelled that he'd passed out, she said. Harris was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police are investigating the young man's death.

I used to eat all kinds of spicy stuff, but had to stop. Some people I guess are more tolerant of it, but why run the risk and prove what exactly?

Did the chip kill the kid, if so how?

Capsaicin is a very selective neuro simulant which kills insects by locking up their nerve systems. Sort of like strychnine for bugs.

It may be quite possible for some individuals to be unusually sensitive to capsaicin, to where they could ingest a lethal dose that would leave other people unaffected.

Think of peanut allergies as an analogy.

I would not be surprised at all to find that this kid died from the overdose of ghost peppers, probably from a lockup of his intestines followed by a cascade of circulatory blockages.

How many chips did he eat?

At least one too many.

Zero would be my limit.

Point being, let’s say he ate five, instead of one, should they still be liable?

“A research study in 1980 calculated that 3 pounds of extreme chilies in powder form — of something like the bhut jolokia — eaten all at once could kill a 150-pound person,”

Bosland, told Live Science.

“However, one’s body would react sooner and not allow it to happen.”

I have no idea. There is a first time for everything.

There is also a last time for everything. The company might want to end this "contest" promotion right now. Because after the next sudden death, they will almost certainly will be held liable.

I was thinking the same thing. Trying to elicit sympathy because he looks so young and naive.

Being black he most likely was using hot sauce for years so his system should have tolerated spicy.

A friend coats the edges of his Trump yard signs with the pure capsaicin oil. Hell for anyone who steals them!

I grew Adjuma one year. My Croation BIL wouldn’t touch it, he bragged he could eat anything. I ate 3 of them outright while enticing others. Nobody bit on that challenge. I made them into Salsa.... OUTstanding.

I’m good to 100K

Habaneros and other similars such as bonnets etc have a weird taste to me, just like that Chinese parsley (cilantro) tastes soapy. It’s not a pleasant flavor.

I like prik peppers, Guam had a variety and in Thailand they had priks. But I don’t see them around. Tabasco peps are a favorite, and fresh hot serranos and cayenne’s are tasty too.
