I think most in Zimbabwe realize that it was the Soviets that created Mugabe and forced the overthrow of Rhodesia.
I believe if Ian Smith stayed in power, by now, Rhodesia would be a prosperous country, where both blacks and whites have equal rights. But they weren’t going to get there overnight.

My grandfather had a farm in North Africa. Seeing the writing on the wall, he sold it for a pittance to a neighbor and accepted a contract to manage some farms in the US. After independence, the government confiscated the land, the neighbor shot himself, and the country went into famine as the output from French farmers ceased. Then they asked many to come back with long, cheap leases.
