My grandfather had a farm in North Africa. Seeing the writing on the wall, he sold it for a pittance to a neighbor and accepted a contract to manage some farms in the US. After independence, the government confiscated the land, the neighbor shot himself, and the country went into famine as the output from French farmers ceased. Then they asked many to come back with long, cheap leases.
