PING!.....................
Oh my. And I just got a 14. Eliminating lightning would be awesome.
Yeah, almost every apple product I’ve owned, and I’ve had alot, ended up having the charging port fail. I kept with them because I like the product features.
USB!!! Yay!!! Reason enough to stand in line overnight and spend $1,200+. 😂 Let’s see how many people have that kind of money.
Beginning with the iPhone 14, there is no longer a physical SIM tray, either.
They’ll switch to USB-C.
But, it won’t have “fast charge” capability.
IPhones will come with 2 charge-ports and 1 Apple cable.
If you want USB-C, get your own slow-charge cable.
I can see the USB-C port being in an awkward spot and covered, too.
USB-C is an upgrade ?
Was it the connector from the charger that failed or the actual port in the device?
I’ve had several Lightning charger connectors fail — the cable tends to fatigue near the base of the connector. But so far no failures of the ports on the devices themselves.
IMO the Lightning connector is superior to the old mini and micro USB-B connectors thanks to being non-directional. You don’t have to fiddle with it to get it to line up with the port. But the new USB-C connector is non-directional so that advantage goes away.
It will set the stage for an "upgrade" when they switch back to lightning cable in the next version.
The "New Coke" effect.
This was ordered by Europe. Europe had a problem with Apple using proprietary parts that were three times the price what Android charging ports were.
Lightning connector has slooowwwww data speeds. Should have been retired years ago. Apple is only doing this because they’ve been forced.
Standardization benefits users. Uniqueness benefits manufacturers. Axiomatic.
This is where $600 hammers and $5000 coffeepots come from....................
If they must go away from the ultra reliable lightning port, USB-C in probably the next most durable connection.
**have**
I've gone to all wireless charging. Home chargers are wireless. Nightstand charger is wireless. Portable battery bank is wireless. Phone holders in both of our cars are wireless.
I haven't used a Lightning Port in literally years (2 at least.)
But when I do, I have a magnetic Lightning cable (actually I have several cables sprinkled around my travel bag, my briefcase, my junk drawer, etc.) and keep the magnetic lighting port adapter plugged into the phone so it is protected from pocket lint, dust, dirt, and the wear-and-tear of being unplugged all the time.
If you insist on cables, I'd at least recommend that.
There are also some phone cases (Otterbox comes to mind) that have a flap that covers the Lightning port when not in use.
