Was it the connector from the charger that failed or the actual port in the device?

I’ve had several Lightning charger connectors fail — the cable tends to fatigue near the base of the connector. But so far no failures of the ports on the devices themselves.

IMO the Lightning connector is superior to the old mini and micro USB-B connectors thanks to being non-directional. You don’t have to fiddle with it to get it to line up with the port. But the new USB-C connector is non-directional so that advantage goes away.

Lightning connector has slooowwwww data speeds. Should have been retired years ago. Apple is only doing this because they’ve been forced.

Pocket lint. For me, I've frequently seen pocket lint.

I’ve had several Lightning charger connectors fail

I've had tons of cables fail. Probably got a dozen of them strewn into my extension chord crate in the garage. For me, it's been the sort of "foil" ends of the lightning cable gets worn and corroded. A lick of the finger and a scrape scrape scrape of a finger nail can get you through a few more charges.

I have had lightning connections on the phone fail due to pocket lint build up.
