MICHIGAN SUSPENDS JIM HARBAUGH: REPORT
OUTKICK ^ | August 21, 2023, 1:36 pm | DAVID HOOKSTEAD

Michigan football coach Jim Harbaugh reportedly will be suspended by the program following self-imposed sanctions.

Harbaugh had been facing a four-game suspension from the NCAA, but negotiations collapsed seemingly at the 11th hour.

It now appears UM will attempt to cut off the NCAA Committee on Infractions before it can get involved. The program will suspend Harbaugh for all three non-conference games, according to multiple Monday afternoon reports.

No official announcement has come from the university. If the reported suspension decision holds, Harbaugh will miss games against East Carolina, UNLV and Bowling Green, and the star coach will then return September 23 against Rutgers.

The suspension stems from allegations Harbaugh broke recruiting rules during the COVID-19 dead periods and then lied about it to the NCAA. The alleged purchasing of cheeseburgers appears to be a minor issue compared to the alleged lying.

The latter seems to be why the NCAA wants to nail Harbaugh to the wall.

Will this get the NCAA off Jim Harbaugh’s back?

The reason programs self-impose punishments is very simple:

They hope a self-imposed punishment signals to the NCAA it’s serious and stops the governing body from coming in and crushing them.

Will three games be enough to get the NCAA to stand down on further punishment for Jim Harbaugh? Time will tell, but it might not be. The NCAA is treating this situation incredibly seriously, and the original brokered punishment was four games. Now, Michigan is handing out a suspension that’s a game less.

“The Michigan infractions case is related to impermissible on and off-campus recruiting during the COVID-19 dead period and impermissible coaching activities – not a cheeseburger. The Committee on Infractions may reject (a ruling, such as the previous four-game suspension) if it determines that the agreement is not in the best interests of the NCAA or the penalties are not reasonable,” NCAA vice president of hearing operations Derrick Crawford said earlier in August.

Doest that sound like a man who thinks three games gets the job done?

While Michigan reportedly self-imposed three games on Harbaugh, this situation still might not be resolved. The NCAA could absolutely still come in and try to cause problems. If that happens next offseason, don’t be surprised if Jim Harbaugh starts flirting with the NFL again.

It’s amazing to me how certain programs get clobbered with NCAA sanctions while others skate free. The North Carolina situation, for example, where they ran a sham African American studies program to pass football and basketball players, perhaps the most egregious violation in amateur sports—the NCAA did nothing. Corey Magette with Duke when he received the 75,000 worth of jewelry and other valuables—the NCAA did nothing. By contrast, Kentucky basketball got hit with a 3-year ban from the NCAA tournament back in the late 80s because a booster sent a player a $1,000 and, allegedly, somebody took the SAT for a recruit.

The NCAA is just the minor leagues for pro sports. Players can now be paid, there really isn’t any academic requirements. Recruitment will be based on who gets their players the best pro contracts.

JIm Harbaugh was heavily targeted by professors for his pro-life, Christian beliefs.

The joke is if you can drive from Indy HQ on the NCAA expense account, and there is no need for overnight TL. Your penalties are intense... Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, Kentucky, South Bend, East Lansing and Lafayette . Illinois’ isn’t listed because any amounts of paying players will not produce a winner there.

The schools more than 200 miles away get away with anything. All sports the MID american conference and the BIG10...big Twenty are about tied for all penalties across all sports.

Ya can't tell that to Bama fans.

Had Harbaugh been a mouthy pro-abortion zealot, he’d be in no trouble at all. Since he spoke courageously on behalf of the unborn, they are out to destroy him.

Baloney! Dexter Manley attended 12 years of high school and 4 years of college and by his own admission could not read or write. But he could play football. That was all that mattered.

It’s more about time than anything else. The NCAA sees what’s going on with the super conferences. They know that they’re putting in the ground work to get out of the NCAA. Johnny Football’s half a game suspension was the beginning of the new era. They know that vacating wins and banning teams from post season play for years is just going to inspire the super conferences to make their move faster. They’re reduced to strongly worded letters for their own survival.

LOL. Ok sport. BTW, Oklahoma State University was ranked 182nd academically by US.News this past year. I think even Jo Biden would be accepted there. Oh, and that’s where Manly went to collidge.

Will the rest of the BIG 10 vote to kill the program? That’s what the PAC 10 did to the UW back in 1992. The NCAA and Washington agreed to minor suspensions for “lack of institutional control” and the rest of the PAC 10 voted to reduce scholarships to 40 per year, 2-year bowl ban. This was right after the UW won the national championship in 1991. Virtually killed the program.

College football teams are self-policing? That’ll really work.
