India's caste system is among the world's oldest forms of surviving social stratification. The BBC explains its complexities.
The system which divides Hindus into rigid hierarchical groups based on their karma (work) and dharma (the Hindi word for religion, but here it means duty) is generally accepted to be more than 3,000 years old. How did caste come about?
Manusmriti, widely regarded to be the most important and authoritative book on Hindu law and dating back to at least 1,000 years before Christ was born, "acknowledges and justifies the caste system as the basis of order and regularity of society".
The caste system divides Hindus into four main categories - Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas and the Shudras. Many believe that the groups originated from Brahma, the Hindu God of creation.
Outside of this Hindu caste system were the achhoots - the Dalits or the untouchables.
Rural communities have long been arranged on the basis of castes - the upper and lower castes almost always lived in segregated colonies, the water wells were not shared, Brahmins would not accept food or drink from the Shudras, and one could marry only within one's caste.
The system bestowed many privileges on the upper castes while sanctioning repression of the lower castes by privileged groups.
Often criticised for being unjust and regressive, it remained virtually unchanged for centuries, trapping people into fixed social orders from which it was impossible to escape.

IT jobs are good jobs and the mass importation of Indians to suffer for 7 years as indentured servants a lot pillow wages before they get their green cards has forced out most Americans from the field and it is now Indian dominated.
They’ve taken over Microsoft, Google, IBM, Micron, etc. and they’ve done it by acting like a mafia. They are a kiss up piss down kind of people.
Take a look at the Biden Regime, it's staffed by a lot of Indians, the VP, Kamala Harris, is half Indian Brahmin. Now we have Vivek running for president of the United States. It's called an invasion, wake up.
Your imagination is most creative. Not actually amusing in itself mind you, but there is the magic of the inadvertent.
There are lots of hierarchical structures on Earth. Most of them exclude Hindus.
That’s what globalization will get you.
A country of over a billion people, desperately poor, and willing to do what they have to do to get out of poverty.
Companies recognized this as a labor pool they could have tremendous leverage over, compared to native employees who would unionize at the drop of a hat, and make more and more demands on them. And now, here we are.
This BBC article was written 4 years ago and you’re posting it now? I saw the articles you posted yesterday and I figured it was just the nonsense formerly aimed at DeSantis now being targeted at Vivek, since DeSantis’ campaign doesn’t seem to be going anywhere, but it looks more like you’ve just got something up your backside about Indians. My mistake.
Take a drive in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania. The Indians have taken over nearly EVERY apartment building.
You see them waiting for buses in the morning. The women wearing the full Indian costume garb, and a Hindu market every mile. It is the Calcutta of America.
And yes, they are very uppity, and think they are superior.
They've moved on up here in Texas, I live in a gated community, and they took it over, there's a huge Hindu temple about a mile away and that's the big draw for folks living in these parts.
The more fair the skin, the greater the worth.
They self-segregated by skin tone!
Also name which is why some change their name when they get to the US

Wonder what caste the Thugs were?
Right now I have 2 Indian specialists, a Paki primary, and Egyptian dentist. All just fine.
Another article on India’s caste system?
Why the obsession with India’s caste system?
We essentially have it here, too and have for many years.
It think that is out of date. The LBGTQ’s are definitely on the top today.
I have a friend who works for a global Indian IT company, and I can tell you that being Indian is a major career enhancement. They hire Indians and promote Indians over Americans. She is a blonde haired, blue eyed white woman, very good at her job, and she has been passed over many times for promotion in favor of an Indian, male or female, that was a recent hire. More than a few of which she trained. They recently had an online video meeting where everyone on the team was recognized but her. Her boss apologized after the meeting for leaving her out, but the message to everyone was clear. Megan, even when her face is on the screen, is invisible.
It is so apparent and such a problem in the company, that the president of the company’s North American division has been working with her to help her move up to a better position. He admits they have an Indian cultural problem that he’s been tasked with dealing with by his bosses.
“Brabmin Indians have taken over the IT field and are close to taking over the medical field.”
Yes, and even politics, now. But what’s behind it?
Brahmins have one of the highest group average IQs in the world and they are at the top of the caste system.
So the caste system is essentially a stratification based on intelligence.
It differs from the western version of the class system in that it is more rigid. Harder to escape your caste.
In the US we also have a class system, but it’s very fluid and not discrete and not socially defined or enforced. Ambitious, intelligent, hard working people still occupy the higher rungs of society.
So, here in the west, the stratification is mainly a statistical construct and not strictly tied to your origins. But to the extent that human traits such as IQ, ambition, honesty, etc are genetically based (which to a significant degree they are), then your origins (family) may determine the strata you end up in. But it’s not dictated by society.
Each individual can occupy any of those statistical strata (the “super rich” , the “upper class” , the “middle class” , the “poor” - these are all statistical constructs) at various times in his life depending on your performance.
So we have stratification in the west, but rather than society forcing you to be in a particular stratum based on your origins, you have a certain amount of control over where you end up based on how well you apply your inborn abilities.
An interesting side note is that in “Brave New World” the caste system was genetically engineering. So you had the Alphas, The Betas, etc. each caste designed to play a particular role in society and everyone in a particular caste was designed to be very happy there and to not want to be part of any other caste. So basically they eradicated envy which made for a very peaceful society.
(My stream of conscienceness thoughts, FWIW)
“I have a friend who works for a global Indian IT company, and I can tell you that being Indian is a major career enhancement.”
Birds of a feather...
Oddly, though, that saying seems to apply to every “bird” except us “white birds”.
“ Why the obsession with India’s caste system? ”
There are a few aggrieved here on FR who blame their woes, real and imaginary, on some ethnic group.
So, the thought begs the question......
How do you determine an Indian you run into in a business environment is Bahamian?
