California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s camp on Saturday blasted Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ proposed rules for a long-touted debate, arguing that they are an attempt to hide his weaknesses as a candidate.
“What a joke,” Newsom spokesperson Nathan Click said in a statement. “Desantis’ counterproposal is littered with crutches to hide his insecurity and ineptitude — swapping opening statements with a hype video, cutting down the time he needs to be on stage, adding cheat notes and a cheering section.”
“Ron should be able to stand on his own two feet,” he added. “It’s no wonder Trump is kicking his ass.”

Those two like the others are not getting the nomination but must be looking for name recognition in 2028 or a cabinet position or that warm bucket of piss called the Vice Presidency.
DeSantis should have waited. His ambition could be his undoing.
DeSantis v. Newsome is more favorable for Republicans than Trump v. Newsome. DeSantis v. Biden it a TKO in second round. No Republican is going to peal off many Democrat voters and vice versa. It’s the independents who are in play. They find Trump off-putting and Biden repulsive, but no firm split. DeSantis and Newsome would be competing for the independents. Newsome might beat Trump, but it’s less likely that he would beat DeSantis.
Only one afraid of DeSantis is his shadow.
They’re not afraid.
DeSantis and Newsom are the two chosen ones, so that whoever wins, the donor’s interests are never compromised.

In politics, you pick who will help you get votes.
Presidential win has more to do with likability & personality than debate skills. DeSantis lacks both.

Trump is “polarizing”. His backers love him, his opponents are over the top mad, but he does not appeal to people who want to live a quiet life.
Political battles are won at the margins, all Trump does is rile up his supporters. (I will vote for him over any Democrat.) A lot of Ann Coulter (a raw-meat conservative if ever there was one) criticism about Trump are accurate.
When Trump was elected, I said that if he just played golf for four years the economy would do better than under Obama. He did much better, and his Supreme Court appointments were superb. He was great on illegal immigration. I just wish he did not act childish and pick pointless fights with potential supporters.
