The Musical Genius of 'Wichita Lineman': A One-on-One with Jimmy Webb [Rick Beato]
youtube ^ | 8-1-2023 | Rick Beato

Posted on 08/05/2023 12:38:49 PM PDT by FLNittany

Long interview, but the best and most in depth interview I've ever seen with Jimmy Webb.

I had no idea he worked for Motown writing songs at age 17. The songs (their rights) they let him walk away with (free) when he left is chuckle worthy.

Certainly worth bookmarking or skimming through. True Jimmy and Glen fans will really like every minute of this.

Rick Beato has one of the best music-related YouTube channels out there. I love watching his shows. He gets some big names to appear from time to time.

Wichita Lineman seems to be about a Wichita Indian who plays offensive guard or tackle on a college football team.

Indeed. Much, much better. I remember hearing that song on the am radio in our ‘64 Pontiac Tempest Station Wagon as a little kid. It touched me even then.

I thought we called a truce to this war a year or so ago Fiji? I’m not biting.

“I am a lineman for the county...”

I’m not thinking this football related.

I am a lineman for the county

And I drive the main road
Searchin’ in the sun for another overload

I hear you singing in the wire
I can hear you through the whine
And the Wichita lineman
Is still on the line

I know I need a small vacation
But it don’t look like rain
And if it snows that stretch down south
Won’t ever stand the strain…

RE: I remember hearing that song on the am radio in our ‘64 Pontiac Tempest Station Wagon as a little kid....

For me it was driving a red 1968 6 cylinder Plymouth Valient going to work and hearing the Glen Campbell version which I think approaches being one of the perfect vocal singles. Car had excellent pickup and was well worth the $2,000 price new.

Funny how music can bring it all back like it was yesterday.

After all these years, Wichita Lineman still gives me goosebumps. Followed closely by Galveston.

New ending....
And if it snows that stretch down south
Won’t ever stand the strain…

And those angry stranded EV drivers
will make me feel their pain.

IIRC, the first six opening notes are by Carol Kaye of the wrecking crew studio musicians. Correct as needrd.

Yep, she sure did. She’s another (along w/ Glen and others from the clique) that is denied entrance to the rrhof while disco acts and unknown “influential for their time” acts skate through.

Time to honor the people that actually played the songs. They’re talking about inducting the Monkees! Fine. They influenced a lot of kids and sold a shit-ton of records. First induct the people that recorded all their songs though.

I’ve been watching Beato for years. Very entertaining, and informative.

You get a lot of pop up ads for similar content creators, that I watch occasionally. One of my other favorites is Ken Tamplin, if you haven’t seen him yet.

He’s given some powerful testimony about his Christian conversion, too.

Dylan referred to it as “the greatest song ever composed” because of its mystical depth.

If anyone is a fan of Terry Pratchett's Discworld... I wrote the lyrics and a friend did the music...

My mom loved Glen Campbell and played “Wichita Lineman” quite a bit on the record player in the living room of my childhood home.
