Bandages infused with casein, a protein that occurs naturally in cow's milk, significantly improved wound healing in rats compared to those in control groups, according to a study.
The study is the first to test casein's reputed healing benefits on an animal model. The promising results suggest that casein, which is cheap, abundant and has antimicrobial properties, has potential to replace expensive materials such as silver in wound dressings.
Casein is a protein found in the milk of mammals and is most abundant in cow's milk, where it makes up to 80% of the substance. In the last decade, interest has grown in casein's antimicrobial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, as well as its utility as a high-protein dietary supplement.
In this study, researchers at UCL mixed pure casein with polycaprolactone (PCL), a biodegradable polyester commonly used as a bandage material. They used a technique called pressurized gyration, which was developed at UCL in 2013, to spin this mixture into bandage-like fibers from which they created casein-infused bandages. This would not have been possible with other, more expensive manufacturing methods such as electrospinning.
Rats with identical small skin perforations were split into three groups. The wounds of those in the first group were treated with casein-infused bandages, the second with normal PCL bandages, and the third with no bandages.
Healing progress was checked after three, seven, 10 and 14 days by photographing and measuring the wounds, as well as examining them under a microscope.
The team found that at 14 days the wounds treated with casein-infused bandages healed to 5.2% of their original size, compared to 31.1% in the normal bandage group and 45.6% in the untreated group.
Analysis also confirmed that the casein bandages were non-toxic and that levels of immune-related molecules were much lower around wounds treated with them.

How many rodents were purposely wounded so scientists could study their festering sores?
Either my bandages smell like spoiled milk with this new treatment, or I have gangrene now.
That explains why DU readership is way down.
I am happy to use rodents for such experiments.
Just pour a pint of milk over your wound. Even if the wound is located on top of your head. Drink what you don’t use.
I’m not sure about this research.
Milk sure doesn’t cure mastitis.

When my cousin and I would visit my aunt and uncle and go rambling in the woods, we would often return with cuts and scratches. My Aunt would sit us at the table, provide cookies and a cup of milk (she and my uncle were not blessed with children so they spoiled us nieces and nephews quite a lot). She would then take a clean “dish rag” and dip it in our milk and wipe it over those injuries. Next, she would say, “Now drink the rest of your milk and eat your cookies”. By the next morning, the cuts and scrapes would barely be noticeable. I haven’t thought about that in years.
This is rather inconvenient to find out now in light of the left’s agenda to kill off cows to save the planet.
They found it first?

Heres a hot tip to the Ivermectin crowd. If you have a open wound thats not bad enough for stitches, clean it well, pat dry, and spread ivermectin horse paste over it then cover with a sterile wrap or bandaid, whatever. I’ve been amazed at how fast my scrapes and cuts heal up. I’m tempted to try to use it on a woke...oh never mind. OH...for infections (mine was ingrown toenail)...all red, puffy and painful..you know? Break open a doxycycline capsule and cover the area with the powder. Pains noticeably lower within hours and all better within a day or two. Then...clip that nail while it doesnt make you want to cry. Cheers.
Do you drive? Do you walk? Do you use a flyswatter?
If you do any of these things, you are actively killing live creatures for your mere comfort.
Do you eat meat? You are responsible or killing animals for your eating enjoyment.
Do you own pets? If so, you are cruelly confining them against their will and nature.
Do you seek to kill mice or rats at home? You are killing them for your comfort, because very few of them will ever cause disease of consequence.
I find it very disturbing and disgusting that someone can live with all the massive killing they encourage, while disdaining medical experiments in which mice were specifically used to trial ways to heal mice and humans.
You have no justification for actions you can completely prevent, hypocrite.
This used to be my signature, and it applies to you:
“Hypocrisy: “Animal rightists” who eat meat & pen up pets while accusing hog farmers of cruelty.”
In ancient times milk was used by doctors to cleanse wounds.......................
