Senator Biden mentioned on ALF. Just a little light talk and thoughts reflecting on today's politics and how low we really fell.
TOPICS: Chit/Chat; Humor; TV/Movies
KEYWORDS: 1980s; alf; biden; fjb; humor; tv
I'm a kid of the 1970's and 1980's. I was among the first big wave on Latchkey Kids, that terms shows what generation I am. While relaxing in bed I like to watch my Roku. I was watching CHiPs and ALF on the Plex app and during the episode of ALF, "Hail to the Chief" where it features dream sequences of Kate (the mother) and ALF debating for the 1988 election and later ALF as POTUS. AT the beginning of the show, the Tanners and ALF were watching a Presidential debate between two cardboard and clueless candidates that was hosted by the late John McLaughlin. McLaughlin asked the old question of "the Red Phone Rings, Soviet Missiles are headed to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave, do you push the button?" The stupid candidate answered "....well as Joe Biden once said, we have nothing to fear but fear itself and by arming ourselves against the impossible, we are preventing the unthinkable from becoming the inevitable." I heard the laugh track and ALF commented that is double talk. I know Biden ran in 1988 until the Neal Kinnock (UK Labour Party) plagiarizing scandal hit and he bowed out and thus was the origin of Rush Limbaugh calling him Neal Kinnock Jr.
I was reflecting on this, I was 22 back then and though Biden was clueless, I just turned 57 now getting close to senior citizenhood here and still think he is clueless. I could see him making such a statement in 1988 and now in 2023
I just think, if someone told me 22 year old self that he'd be President one day, I'd laugh him all the way to Mars. Back in 1988, he was seen as a buffoon and butt of jokes, now he is POTUS. Maybe this is small potatoes and light topic but I just had to post this sense of irony somewhere.

Some thought the same of then-President Ronald Reagan’s arc in life.
ALF always reminded me a bit of RR.

I miss the 80’s. Music, movies, and society.
I did hate tv the one summer when some Marine was on all day...

He is the only one that could beat Trump. Everyone knew that. None of the other freaks of nature (Kamala, DeBlasio, Buttygig, Warren, Klobuchar, Tom K.) could have beaten Trump because of their weirdness. Biden compared to them looked like a normal, if senile guy. The others were flat out non-starters.

America takes comfort in an old white man. If it was woman or a black man, there would be more resistance to the policies by the administration in power.

"It's for sure a white man's world in America. Look here: I raised that boy since he was the size of a piss-ant. And I'll say right now, he never learned to read and write. No, sir. Had no brains at all. Was stuffed with rice pudding between th' ears. Shortchanged by the Lord, and dumb as a jackass. Look at him now! Yes, sir, all you've gotta be is white in America, to get whatever you want. Gobbledy-gook!"

Exactly right. The independents and low info voters are easily fooled by superficialities, and took comfort in a familiar face. He has high approval ratings precisely because of this. The other reason is Trump has poisoned the well. People hate him with a searing passion. That has blunted the sharpness of the opposition to Biden’s policies, unlike Obama’s policies, which saw a severe backlash, even though they were less extreme than Biden’s.

Maybe the last president with this much power was Andrew Jackson. And he's not even done with his first term.

I do too. If we may go a bit further back but if my mother was still alive, she would say, "I miss the world of Andy Williams and the Glenn Campbell Goodtime Hour." Even so, I really miss the 1980's. As time goes on, I often say, "where is Airwolf when we need them."

Well, Kamala is the padawan of Biden so she speaks jibberish just as well.

Biden compared to them looked like a normal, if senile guy. The others were flat out non-starters. Joe looked like a loser too, well into the primaries. I think your assessment is nearly correct - Biden was the only candidate that they could use as a call-back to Obama... and therefore the only one that could have even a smidgen of plausibility after the vote fraud kicked in. That is all they needed.

Alf also indicated that he was forced to withdraw from the 1988 presidential race when he was accused of eating Donna Rice’s cat. I was surprised that line got past the censors.
